About this product

Product Information

'Every Scot should read it. Scotland now has the lively, provocative and positive history it deserves.' Irvine Welsh, Guardian A dramatic and intriguing history of how Scotland produced the institutions, beliefs and human character that have made the West into the most powerful culture in the world. Arthur Herman argues that Scotland's turbulent history, from William Wallace to the Presbyterian Lords of the Covenant, laid the foundations for 'the Scottish miracle'. Within one hundred years, the nation that began the eighteenth century dominated by the harsh and repressive Scottish Kirk had evolved into Europe's most literate society, producing an idea of modernity that has shaped much of civilisation as we know it. He follows the lives and work of thinkers such as Adam Smith and David Hume, writers such as Burns and Boswell, as well as architects, technicians and inventors, and traces their legacy into the twentieth century. Written with wit, erudition and clarity, The Scottish Enlightenment claims the Scots' rightful place in the history of the western world.

  • An American view of the Scots

Depending on what you expected it to be exactly , this book overdoes the eulogising of some Scots , if it all be true sad it is that today such praise can no longer be pointed in that direction . The rot commenced with the American influence in the 1960s with the motto 'make love not war- and where is my Social Security ' , nowadays few want to work letting the members of a overpopulated world come and do it for them; this inspired and largely controlled by the interests of a certain group where successful enterprises are bought over and controlled by others be it football teams or technological businesses , the whole edifice resting on candy-floss .

  • As it says on the front cover ‘Every Scot should read it.’ So many Scots we’re leading and in the heart of shaping the world as we know it.

  • Every Scots person should read this

Interesting (very) and informative. A compelling read about who we are, what our influence and mistakes were and how we got to be where we are today. Maybe English people shoul read it too and try to grasp that Scotland isn't actually a region but a country.

  • A most enlightening read!

A most enlightening read! I learned more about Scottish history from this book than I was ever taught in school in the 50's. It was good to see ourselves as others see us and thanks are due to Arthur Herman for his excellent book. It seems Scotland achieved most in a period when England was not meddling or worse. Could independence bring about a similar resurgence in the 21st century?
