What Harner writes about is his own method, which is more about psychology and practising self guided meditations, and not much to do with Actual Shamanism. His stripping of a proper cosmology, belief, and cultural elements ended up taking off the real core of Shamanism, which is working with spirits by means of trance. The Harner method is but a cultural misappropriation from some common elements from different forms of shamanism, to commoditise a merchandisable method to cater for his own American culture, and line his pockets. Thanks to Harner and other Authors like Castaneda, the Western culture have a very distorted idea about what Shamanism is, and a terrible attitude of disrespect to the cultural values and the elements that matter the most in an authentic traditional practice. Avoid this book and other workshop pushing authors that cannot explain cosmology, tradition, or hold any lineage training. Most of this methods are but culture damaging fantasy, capitalising on the ignorance of the western public, which can do better by researching their ancestry and find the animistic practices within their own blood lines history, or searching for book written by actual shamans from a proper tradition and lineage.Read full review

Covers an awful lot of stuff, with some quite unusual viewpoints. Some of the info not applicable to the UK. Certainly gave me food for thought.
