The information in this book is groundbreaking and extremely valuable. It is taking me an inordinate amount of time to read it however because there are waaaaaay too many cutsey analogies and clever phrases. Almost every sentence in some cases. I find this to be distracting from the much needed important information. He's playing to the lower level of reader here, the video game generation who can't go for more than two sentences without getting bored and needing some (irritating to my mind) sensory input. The way he writes isn't unlike the bells and whistles you find on a loud video game. I guess if your book is on Oprah, you don't have to consider the need to respect your reading audience's intelligence. I wish he'd put out a book with "just the facts". Having said that, it is an important book for those who really wish to know how the body works and how to improve on it. His evaluation of the role inflammation and stress play in excess weight is very useful information for me. He doesn't tell much about where the inflammation comes from except for the categories of food that can cause it. Expect the AMA and FDA main-line position here on things like pollution, chemicals in soils and food, artificial stuff in food and especially the toxins in drugs as they are not discussed. All in all, an important book to have if you can wade through it.Read full review
I'm nowhere near finished. To have all this information helps immensely but like all "diets" there are restrictions that are hard to bear and, in this case, hard to understand. Bearing in mind these are drs. I didn't feel that they talked down to me but some of their counsel didn't really resonate with me either. I don't weigh myself every day. Never have. So why, suddenly, do I have to measure myself every day??? I's not like 5 inches are going to melt away overnight, only to return the following night, so why? They never explain this in a manner that satisfies me! As I said, I'm not finished with the book but so far... There is some to take and some to leave, just as in every other diet book I've ever bought and read. I will say that it goes into GREAT detail about diet and nutrition and touches on areas that have not previously been touched upon in other diet books so for that alone, it is a worthwhile investment.Read full review
I must first warn you that every second or third sentence in this book is a joke or pun. While I personally find this book to be highly amusing and entertaining, others may find the dosage of humor to be excessive. The negative reviews here are essentially, I believe, a result of personality clash. Not everyone can appreciate humorous reading, let alone interwoven with profoundly intricate (and serious) information about how the body works. I find the mixing of the two elements an unusual presentation. I think it works...IF you have a good sense of humor. The illustrations mirror the spirit of the text. They are as detailed as they are amusing. Missing out on reading this book would be unfortunate. I must reiterate that the insight this book offers on how the human body works (relative to weight) is to an extent of detail that I (and probably you) have never read anywhere else. You'll learn from a cellular chemical reaction level WHY you shouldn't eat that jelly doughnut. I greatly admire that psychological and even spiritual issues are gently presented, as well. No boot camp mentality here. The authors are not above the use of pharmaceuticals or weight-loss surgery for someone to reach their goal. Even cosmetic surgery for after the weight is gone is discussed. They don't seem to hold any illusions. Yes, I read the deodorant theory. I don't have an intimate companion, either. Don't sweat the things that don't necessarily apply to you. What does and will apply to you can be IMMENSELY useful! The plan is not difficult to implement. Even if you use an eating plan other than the one presented in the book, read the book anyway. There's some really good information on what affects a person's weight, and you can use that information to your benefit.Read full review
I purchased this after hearing Dr. Oz on Oprah. I knew alot about physiology yet was hearing new things that interested me. The connection with fats and sugars on metabolism, is made very clear in the book and with lots of drawings and clear descriptions, analogies really imprints on the brain the need to clean up our diets. The benefits are a shrinking waistline, healthier liver, arteries, and intestines. I have applied some of the suggestions, cleaning out the bad foods, right kinds of snacks, portion size and have noticed a change for the better. The 2 week diet in the book is reasonable...havent started it yet, may not need too if these other 1st suggestions are sufficient for me. The exercise routine is very good for those who cant get to a gym...not necessary. Have enjoyed doing it regularly. Highly recommend this book, great motivator and based on accurate knowledge of the human body. Also very comforting to read if we get past the mental stuff that blocks path to eatting right our bodies actually have a "set point" and want to get there. We're not destined to be overweight. He discusses those issues and even offers suggestions to deal with those issues...very smart. The evidence, in the lives of those that apply these suggestions are the proof that this is appropriate advice.Read full review
I decided to buy this book because it deals with belly fat and I am in serious desire to trim the fat off my middle. Because it was a NYTimes best seller and highly publicized and EBay price discounted I chose You On A Diet. Great choice - highly readable, punctuated with humorous remarks and comic drawings to illustrate the anatomical scene, and to leave you with visual memory of what happens with your insides when your diet is wacko. I find myself remembering some little devil character with a pitchfork, pinching my intestines, and so I bypass the fried fritters and go for a baked potato, etc. Also covered is the exercise aspect which inspired me to start riding my real bike again, and already friends are noticing I look good--feel good--Thanks, You On A Diet, I commend and recommend you.Read full review
The authors have taken the latest medical evidence and presented it in the most comprehensive, informative, interesting, "diet" book I have ever read. Sub-titled "The owner's manual for waist management", they explain why a smaller waistline girth rather than total body weight is key to good health. This book has it all: A light-hearted, but extremely comprehensive, presentation of how your body stores fat and processes the food you eat. Dozens of simple illustrations help destroy popular misconceptions. Foods to eat and those to avoid - how to identify them - and why we should follow these guidelines. Your emotions and the influence of others and outside forces on your ability to control your weight. And recommended strategies to deal with them. For the diet purists, A 14-week, flexible, meal plan with shopping list, and a recipe section with many sample recipes. Stressing the importance of physical activity, not just while dieting, but for overall health. The "YOU Diet" Activity Audit presents what you need to do, and how much. An explanation of diet drugs, plastic surgery, and bariatric surgical procedures, how they work, and when they may be indicated. A very different approach to weight loss. There are dozens of "YOU-reka Moments" when you come upon facts which challenge your preconceptions and explain diet facts. ("YOU-reka! If you can allow your body and brain to subconsciously do the work of controlling your eating, you'll naturally gravitate toward your ideal playing weight.") Dozens of "Factoids", presenting condensed information, are highlighted throughout the text. The book is full of "Myth Busters". It is easy and fun to read. The authors have presented the most comprehensive and detailed information in a light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek manner. Never removing the focus from the importance of waistline control, but always aware that we are human and may make some poor choices from time to time. They advocate a "YOU-turn" when you have strayed. This is a fresh new approach to health management, and one you will enjoy exploring. I highly recommend this book.Read full review
Wow just can't put this book down even though I'm very busy all the time. 5-STARS from me. This is like a health bible. Explains how your body processes that dreaded fat and all the bad stuff we eat not realizing what its doing inside our bodies. This is a wake up call and I will never forget or be without my book. Also this book is wrote in very simplistic laymens terms so all of us can better understand and comprehend. Loaded with info. throughout. Has some cartoon sketches to really help you get a grip as well-some is comical, but really sinks in. This explains all about the good fats, the healthiest food we should be grabbing. Also their is a You food plan, exercises everything-simplified. Words can't describe how great a book. I wish more people knew about this book-like every family in america. I first seen Dr Mehmet Oz on Oprah one day. I couldn't stop listening. Then I found out about this book and the website as well. The book has so much knowledge. They are very intune with the body. I plan to read all the other books by the authours but this book is by far my first choice and I needed it the most. I am already implementing changes in my life and my families as well.Read full review
I was so impressed when I began reading this book. I expected to learn a lot, but I didn't expect to be so entertained in the process. The book is written in very easy to understand language that desribes how the human body reacts to the food we eat. Broken into small paragraphs and littered with comical illustrations, the text flows smoothly and quickly. I found myself eager to start each new chapter. As Ophah says, I had many "aha moments" as I recognized my personal experiences described so vividly. I kept thinking "that's exactly what happens to me" and "so that's why I feel this certain way." By the end I was very motivated to toss out all of the junk in my kitchen and start eating the way my body wants me too. I later found myself explaining what I learned to my friends and family. I felt as knowledgable as a doctor telling my patients what to eat in order to look and feel terrific. Giving our bodies what they are desined to eat and avoiding the foods that clog up our systems can dramatically improve our lives. Dr. Oz promises that in just two short weeks you can lose 10 pounds and have your body running 100% efficiently. Buy this book and then share it with a friend.Read full review
I have owned and read cover to cover at least 35 diet books in my life, and this is the first one that has really made me "get it". At first, I thought "What is all this gibberish about the digestive system and hypothalami gland? - Boring!" Then because the way facts were presented interested me, I kept reading. Now I understand, really understand what triggers my hunger, and my satiety! I have lost 14 pounds without dieting and now feel enough energy to begin the exercises in the book. The information in this book is power, and I advise people like me, with uncontrollable appetites, to give it a chance. Give yourself a chance. You can feel better, even while you are losing weight, and I love all the food I eat now. I just have skipped eating lots of foods that were killing me and making me hungry. Do read with an open mind, and give it a chance!Read full review
In spite of the review title above, this is a very interesting read. It explains why so many people struggle with dieting, actually getting into the scientific aspects without boring you. For those that have struggled with diets, only to regain the weight (and sometimes more!), this book is for you. You will understand what is actually happening and what you need to work on to truly lose weight. The authors have a great sense of humor that help make this very interesting as you read it. They also refer to some websites for add'l support. The book contains very good recipes and meal plans that give you an idea about what will work from a diet perspective. It has really helped me to better understand my body, but to lose weight. The authors also have some other books out there as well, and I have started reading one - again, very interesting and insightful!Read full review
