Darker Than Black is definitely an anime that you won’t want to miss. It’s one of my favorites and I compare it a little to Ghost in the Shell. The story line is complex, filled with drama, suspense, and action; everything you need in a good show. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes a main character who is hard to figure out. One second you think you understand him and the next you don’t. The story begins ten years ago, when an abnormal territory known as Hell’s Gate appears, causing the stars in the sky to vanish. Various people begin to gain supernatural powers and are monitored by the government. These individuals are called Contractors because of an involuntary compulsion to “pay the price” each time their power is used. The prices range from meaningless tasks to self-harm. Contractors are known to murder in cold blood, smothering unnecessary emotions with logic and rationale. Various nations and organizations around the world train and utilize Contractors as spies and assassins, resulting in violent battles for valuable objects and information. Hei, a Chinese Contractor and the main protagonist acts as a spy and assassin, working for the Syndicate. His “mundane identity” is a gentle-hearted student from China named Lee Shenshun, but when “working” he takes on the role of a seemingly emotionless and ruthless killer nicknamed ‘The Black Reaper’. Hei has a huge appetite and lacks the typical rational reasoning demonstrated by all Contractors (the 'cost' paid for using Contract Powers) which shrouds his true character in mystery. Hei is searching for information regarding his sister Pai, who was a Contractor - the original BK-201 - who disappeared during the implosion of Heaven's Gate several years prior. It is only after her disappearance that Hei gains Contractor abilities (in particular, the same abilities his sister had) as well as the BK-201 designation.Read full review
As a collector of strange, off-beat anime, I loved the unique, non-recycled plotline and genuinely interesting characters. This first season was exceptional in offering mind-boggling ideals, captivating scenarios, and awesome action.
I really enjoy sci-fi, mind screwy anime. This show has engaging characters, intriguing storylines, and plenty of action. DTB is probably my favorite anime, and I'm excited to finally add it to my collection.
