AMD 64 Series - One Stage Further.
Having seen the writing on the wall for the XP range of processors and experienced some of the problems with keeping them cool, I decided to go down the 64 route this autumn and build an Athlon 64 system that would (a) do what I wanted it to do for the foreseeable future, and (b) stay reliable. I bought a 3700+ and fitted it to an MSI 7049 motherboard together with 2048 of DDR400, all sourced from eBay sellers, using an existing install of XP SP2 on a 120Gb WD EIDE hard drive. No problems at all on setup apart from a minor glitch with the Radeon 9800 driver; boot and shutdown times have improved significantly over the old XP setup and most importantly, CPU temperatures now hovers around 22 degrees C - a good eight degrees below motherboard levels and usually only a couple of degrees ... The chip can be overclocked quite easily, either by changing the FSB setting or the multiplier without altering vCore at all; this one runs at 2.3 GHz with an increase in FSB only, but I have pushed it to 2.54 GHz by using 212 FSB and a 12:1 multiplier on stock voltage. However for that effort there was no really noticable increase in performance and booting from warm became a hit-and-miss affair, so I'd guess that a step-up of 0.05v on vCore would be the answer to that. Overall performance at 2.3 GHz has been a revelation by comparison with the old XP range, I suspect mainly because of the onboard 1024 L2 cache; pages and transitions come up on the touch of the button, and multitasking is a vast improvement over the socket A systems. As an example, the only game I ever play is MS Flight Sim 2006, which is pretty much unplayable on my old setup (XP2700+ @ 2.4 GHz, 1532 PC2700), resembling a Powerpoint slideshow rather than a modern game. Using the same R350 9800Pro on stock settings however, with the A64 the Sim can be used more-or-less as it's supposed to be used as long as FSAA is turned down and the bells and whistles turned off. There we have it, then; at current prices - typically £20 - 25 for a 1M cache 3700 and around the same for a viable motherboard, it represents extremely good value and a more than worthwhile upgrade for those still using Socket A/ 462 systems.
