First thing to know is that the books and the tv series is quite a bit different. That being said... I at first found it odd to be reading a book that was in first person point of view from a serial killer's viewpoint. But the descriptions of the people and events around him were just too entertaining to let go of. Dexter truly has no feeling one way or the next about the people or things around him. Most are just there to "disguise" what he really is. Dexter is a blood-splatter specialist for the Miami-Dade police. His sister is in vice (but wants to be a detective) in the same police station. Before them, their father, Harry (Dexter's adoptive father), was also a highly decorated cop. Dexter has an attractive girlfriend who has two kids. He brings in donuts for himself and a lab partner at work. And, oh yea, he kills people on a regular basis. Unlike other serial killers though, Dexter follows a code - the "Code of Harry." He only kills other killers who have escaped justice. A kind of caped crusader, minus the cape and add a hawaiian shirt. He is a scoiciopath, but because his father and sister was always there for him, he feels like he shouldn't let them down by completly becoming the monster he sees himself to be. When a case comes along that they don't need him on (Because the bodies are left with NO blood) he is intrigued and somewhat jealous at this new killer's "work" and he just can't stay away from the case.Read full review
This is one of the best murder mysteries I have ever read. Dexter is a forensic blood splatter specialist for the Miami police department, who often gets hunches to for solving serial crimes. The reason is he is a serial killer himself, though he only kills other serial killers. These aren't spoilers, we know this from the first page of this beautifully written and original book. Jeff Lindsay brilliantly made me sympathetic for one of the most loathsome elements of our society and by the end of the novel, as I was realizing what was taking place, I began to question my own sensibilities. I was drawn in to the world of Dexter so completely that when the character and I were realizing the clues at the same time. Do I have the mind of a serial killer? No. Is Jeff Lindsay a very talented author? Yes. If you are even a slight fan of the genre, I would suggest you read this book. I am definitely going to watch the television series when it premeires.Read full review
In a wold of mindless book-clones, sequels, and just poorly written books, reading has become, what feels like, a chore. But then out of the darkness creeps Dexter. You wont see him coming, but once he slips his noose of 50 lb fishing line around your neck, you belong to him. Literally I was not able to put this book down. I started with low expectations, but somehow by the end of the first page, I felt like a kid reading my first book again (although this is a bit more grim than Green Eggs and Ham). I flipped through page after page, and when I hit the end, I stopped, breathed out deeply, and thought, "Wow... that is what a book is supposed to be like." Then I flipped to the front and started all over again. I have now read all 3 Dexter books (This first book over 5 times), and I can comfortably say to you that I am addicted to the drug that is the Dexter series of books, and I'm SO looking forward to my next fix. If you found this book because your a fan of the show, you NEED to buy this book. The book will take you in Dexter's head in a way the show can only hint at.Read full review

The book was great..Ive watched the show on HBO...and quite honestly ..Im HOOKED....its kinda creepy in its own twisted way....but no one really has to relate to it..its amusing and fun to watch!!!
This book is the first of the Dexter series, and one of my favorites. It is written exceedingly well and turns a dark matter into an amusing one. Dexter is a one of a kind of monster, one you'll grow to be fond of. It's a fantastic read, one you can read more than once.
The story is amazing, its always interesting to read about a person that is flawed and still manages to be the hero of the story.
This is a great, and i mean great book! Have you seen the tv show? Wow, this series has blown up and is getting more popular every day. The value of this 1st edition is sure to get way up there!! Book shows are selling at $100-150!! as of 10/07.
Dexter is a monster, but he is also a lovable hero. He takes out the bad guys without remorse, in fact, he enjoys his killing hobby. He is without true emotion, but is clearly very human. Wonderfully written, this is a book you will want to read over and over again.
