Title: New book shows Royal Oak's roots Author: Michael P. McConnell Publisher: Daily Tribune Staff Date: 4/2/2010 In their new book "Royal Oak," journalists Maureen McDonald and John Schultz look beyond the contemporary facades of the city's buildings, institutions and roads and into a past that reveals the spirit of a community which rose from an unpromising swampland dense with oak trees. "People were attracted to the area and began to chop down the swamp oaks to build the city," said McDonald, a former Daily Tribune reporter who writes for publications such as Crain's Detroit Business and the Detroit News. "What's fascinating is that it's been a town for 150 years. There is such a sense of community and you really begin to feel it when you start digging into its history." Schultz, a former editor at the Daily Tribune and the Detroit News, is a 30-year resident of Royal Oak who says the city retains a pull on those who grew up here. "The churches came, the schools were built and a nice downtown started to grow," he said. "So many people have grown up in Royal Oak and they go away to college, but it seems they all return." The land in and around Royal Oak became a village in 1891 and the city was incorporated 30 years later. The book is part of Arcadia Publishing's "Images of America" series of local and regional histories. Containing nearly 200 photographs on 128 pages, "Royal Oak" offers a sight tour through the decades with brief textual descriptions. Moving here in 1831, Orson Starr was the first resident to put the community on the map with his manufactured Starr's cowbells, which gained a national reputation among farmers and westward bound pioneers. Stars of varying magnitude emerged from Royal Oak in later years, including musician Glenn Frey of the Eagles, bestselling author Judith Guest, political activist Tom Hayden, assisted-suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian and the controversial Fr. Charles E. Coughlin. With a flair for public relations and political agitation, the demagogic Catholic priest quickly raised money to build the Shrine of the Little Flower Church at 12 Mile and Woodward in the 1930s. Coughlin began broadcasting on radio station WJR. Soon the "Radio Priest" earned a spot on the national stage with weekly political broadcasts that drew 30 million listeners. But Coughlin's flirtation with anti-Semitism and his isolationist stand before World War II caused church officials to order him off the air by 1942. Still, Coughlin lived in the area until his death in 1979 and the iconic 104-foot charity crucifixion tower outside the church was named a national shrine a dozen years ago. Locally, Coughlin also had an impact on the residential real estate surrounding the church. "He was instrumental in bringing a lot of Catholics into the city," Schultz said. "There were people who purposely lived in the shadow of the Shrine." World-renowned sculptor Marshall Fredericks kept a studio here and his last public commission, the 40-foot bronze "Star Dream Fountain" was completed outside City Hall shortly before the artist died in 1998. Woodard Avenue is the oldest paved road in the U.S., but included in the book is an arresting photo of 12 Mile Road from nearly 100 years ago showing it as a rural two-track road with wood planking to accommodate only a single car or carriage. Similarly, many of the city's downtown buildings have historic roots beyond their current incarnations.
