About this product

Product Information

This deluxe collector's edition of Tolkien's modern classic is boxed and bound in green leatherette with gold and red foil rune stamping on the spine and cover. The text pages are printed in black with green accents. It includes five full page illustrations in full color and many more in two color in addition to Thror's map -- all prepared by the author. J.R.R. Tolkien's own description for the original edition: "If you care for journeys there and back, out of the comfortable Western world, over the edge of the Wild, and home again, and can take an interest in a humble hero (blessed with a little wisdom and a little courage and considerable good luck), here is a record of such a journey and such a traveler. The period is the ancient time between the age of Faerie and the dominion of men, when the famous forest of Mirkwood was still standing, and the mountains were full of danger. In following the path of this humble adventurer, you will learn by the way (as he did) -- if you do not already know all about these things -- much about trolls, goblins, dwarves, and elves, and get some glimpses into the history and politics of a neglected but important period. For Mr. Bilbo Baggins visited various notable persons; conversed with the dragon, Smaug the Magnificent; and was present, rather unwillingly, at the Battle of the Five Armies. This is all the more remarkable, since he was a hobbit. Hobbits have hitherto been passed over in history and legend, perhaps because they as a rule preferred comfort to excitement. But this account, based on his personal memoirs, of the one exciting year in the otherwise quiet life of Mr. Baggins will give you a fair idea of the estimable people now (it is said) becoming rather rare. They do not like noise." "

"In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit." So begins one of the most beloved and delightful tales in the English language. Set in the imaginary world of Middle-earth, at once a classic myth and a modern fairy tale, The Hobbit is one of literature's most enduring and well-loved novels. Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum. Written for J.R.R. Tolkien's own children, The Hobbit has sold many millions of copies worldwide and established itself as a modern classic., This deluxe collector's edition of Tolkien's modern classic is boxed and bound in green leatherette with gold and red foil rune stamping on the spine and cover. A lovely book, in excellent condition (as described); and so well-protected against the possibility of damage while in transit. Many thanks indeed to the seller for this. All aspects of the transaction have been trouble-free: price; meticulous accuracy of description; great care taken in packaging; speed of transit; scrupulously fair-minded and honest in communication. A first-class eBay seller. Highly recommended. Thank you, Steve, very much for a beautiful book.

In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit.

One of my favorite books of all time. And it is a good "entry point" story for entering Tolkien's world of Middle Earth. The Hobbit is both a prologue to The Lord of the Rings, and in a few places it hearkens back the epic struggle against evil in The Silmarillion, in the First Age of Middle Earth. I can't imagine any Tolkien fan ever tiring of reading and re-reading The Hobbit. This particular edition, in a green binding with slipcase is larger than some others, making it easier to read the runic inscriptions on the cover. The maps inside the cover are also a good scale for reading and viewing. This is a volume I will treasure for life.

Love the story - disappointed with the product received

the story is awesome and wanted my own hardcover copy. Unfortunately the copy i received has most of the picture panels torn out of the book. This was disappointing as they add to the story

  • Childhood Dreams made real

What I love about eBay is that you can track down better editions of what you read as a child. I ruined two paperback editions toting the Hobbit on family vacations and back and forth to babysitting jobs… and to spend the money on my own hardcover book with my allowance would have taken three years to save up for. So now 40 years later I have an edition worth handing down for generations. Such a great story I’ve actually read the book cover to cover 8 times.

  • Glamorous presentation of Tolkien's work

In this edition, Tolkien's classic story is presented with his original artwork. It is a delight to see how the author envisioned his own story. The format is an attractive size, allowing for greater enjoyment of the maps and other visual aspects.

  • Excellent book! Beautifully made.

The book is well made and it looks really good on the shelve. The price is perfect for the high quality of the book. I purchased a set with the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and it was cheap; this lead me to purchase single books, and I'm thankful I came across this book. Highly recommend it!
