Synopsis
Vivid, powerful and absorbing, this is a first-person account of one of the most startling military episodes in history: the overthrow of Montezuma's doomed Aztec Empire by the ruthless Hernan Cortes and his band of adventurers. Bernal D az del Castillo, himself a soldier under Cortes, presents a fascinatingly detailed description of the Spanish landing in Mexico in 1520 and their amazement at the city, the exploitation of the natives for gold and other treasures, the expulsion and flight of the Spaniards, their regrouping and eventual capture of the Aztec capital. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators., Vivid, powerful and absorbing, this is a first-person account of one of the most startling military episodes in history- the overthrow of Montezuma's doomed Aztec Empire by the ruthless Hernan Cortes and his band of adventurers. Seller responded quickly to all questions, but it took a week to ship and another 10 days for delivery. The item matches the description, so if shipping time is not critical, this seller can be recommended.

The book was competitively priced, ordering was easy, the book was well packaged and arrived safely, and its condition was exactly as specified. The delivery time from ordering to mailbox was a little long (14 days), but overall it was a good experience and I would use this seller again.

The condition and value of the book are 100% wonderful. My only disappointment was with the shipping process , the item was only shipped after I conveyed my displeasure that the book did not leave their facility for a week. They were unapologetic, by the time I told them to cancel the order, they informed me that it was on it's way, but shipping information did not support it.

  • Bernal Diaz' Amazing Autobiography Of The Conquest Of Mexico (J.M. Cohen Translation)

This autobiographical account of the conquest of New Spain by the valiant Spanish Conquistadores is truly one of the most amazing occurrences in the history of the world. The Roman Catholic Spanish Conquistadores encountered savage opposition from both Mayan and Aztec Indians who tried to kill the soldiers and sacrifice them to their pagan idols. The Mayans and Aztecs they encountered sacrificed countless victims in their mistaken pagan beliefs that these sacrifices pleased their pagan gods. The elite used the sacrifices as a means of controlling the people and controlling foreigners they conquered. The valorous Spanish Conquistadores overthrew these savage practices against overwhelming odds. Along the way they gathered fantastic wealth in riches of gold, silver, jewels, and ...

  • First hand Spanish account

When you get this book here's what will help, a Spanish, Nahuatl, English dictionary & a map of the Mexican ,Yucatan area with both modern and Indigenes name places. I found it strange that Bernal Diaz didn't clear up the murder of Mocetazuma, something that is still contested today. Good book

  • Easy read by historical standards, good translation.

Better than what is carelessly thrown around in most classrooms, let alone leisurely by those who SHOULD know better.
