Synopsis
Richly illustrated with photographs of historical heritage, this book chronicles " major" events which led to the rise and fall of dynasties. The focus is also on historical figures such as a petty bureaucrat in the Qin dynasty, a writer who loved travelling, or a scholar-official who devoted himself to calligraphy and painting. In this way, the authors, all young historians, narrate stories about the history of ancient China: from the era of the Warring States (475- 221 BC) when seven kingdoms wrestled with each other for supremacy to the unification of the country in the Qin dynasty (221- 207 BC), from the period of Three Kingdoms (220- 280) when it was divided again after the collapse of the Han dynasty (206 BC- AD 220) to the massive Rebellion of An Lushan (755- 763), which shook the Tang dynasty (618- 907), and from the everyday life in the Song dynasty (960- 1279) to the increased integration of ethnic groups to the transformation of the country in the Ming (1368- 1644) and Qing (1636- 1911) dynasties. Who were Chinese? How did they become what they are today? What does it mean to be Chinese in a long run? The book attempts to address such issues that have been widely discussed., Different from other civilizations in the world, the classical civilization in China originated from a source of its own and have evolved continually over more than 5,000 years. How was it created and has become what it is today? How was a pluralistic integration developed and recognized by the inhabitants of the landmass in the East? How did they broaden their understandings of other groupings and were understood? To answer the questions above, this book begins in ancient times, detailing the historical and geographical origins of the Chinese civilization and tracing its development up to the last imperial dynasty. Along the way, the three young historians provide illuminating details that add color to the informative description of each era of Chinese history. The illustrations that show artifacts and historical heritage contextualize events of the time, as well as clues to the appearances and lives of personages described in the book. Engrossing, accurate, and a pleasure to read, Ancient China is an excellent way to learn about the ancient history of one of the world's oldest and greatest civilizations.

The book I bought was reasonably priced and when it arrived it was in the 'Like New' condition specified in the listing. However, when I saw that the seller had not shipped the book after more than 15 days had passed since my order I felt I must write to say that I had actually placed an order with the seller and inquire when it planned to send the book. The brusque reply was that a tracking number was available, but no number HAD been created until I pointed out that I had placed the order.
