Reviews"A novel that brilliantly illuminates some of the darker interconnections between politics and sex . . . Just as the world of Orwell's 1984 gripped our imaginations, so will the world of Atwood's handmaid!" -- The Washington Post Book World " The Handmaid's Tale deserves the highest praise." -- San Francisco Chronicle "Atwood takes many trends which exist today and stretches them to their logical and chilling conclusions . . . An excellent novel about the directions our lives are taking . . . Read it while it's still allowed." -- Houston Chronicle "Splendid."-- Newsweek, "A novel that brilliantly illuminates some of the darker interconnections between politics and sex . . . SynopsisNow a Hulu series starring Elizabeth Moss. The Handmaid's Tale is an instant classic and eerily prescient cultural phenomenon, from "the patron saint of feminist dystopian fiction" (New York Times) The Handmaid's Tale is a novel of such power that the reader will be unable to forget its images and its forecast. Set in the near future, it describes life in what was once the United States and is now called the Republic of Gilead, a monotheocracy that has reacted to social unrest and a sharply declining birthrate by reverting to, and going beyond, the repressive intolerance of the original Puritans. The regime takes the Book of Genesis absolutely at its word, with bizarre consequences for the women and men in its population. The story is told through the eyes of Offred, one of the unfortunate Handmaids under the new social order. In condensed but eloquent prose, by turns cool-eyed, tender, despairing, passionate, and wry, she reveals to us the dark corners behind the establishment's calm facade, as certain tendencies now in existence are carried to their logical conclusions. The Handmaid's Tale is funny, unexpected, horrifying, and altogether convincing. It is at once scathing satire, dire warning, and a tour de force. It is Margaret Atwood at her best. • Frightening, in that it could happen!

The author grabs you from the beginning of these women's story. She never let's you go. I cannot wait to read the next book. I felt their fear and despair. The background feels as real as my own town. Being uber rich in her world assures them of getting what they want when they want it, including taking another person and enslaving them until they're of no further use. Scary!

  • Couldn't put this book down!

This story is quite compelling...in fact, I found it hard to put down! The print is large enough for me to easily read with my very nearsighted eyes, the book not too heavy to hold for hours at a time (which is exactly how I ended up reading it-hours at a time). I could see how this story could possibly come true in real life with how the events in the book unfolded. Seen through the eyes of Offred, the world of Gilead comes to life and the way her life changed and how it affected her and the people around her will stay with you for quite some time. I can't wait to read the sequel!

  • Honestly

I recommend anyone to read the tale. Honestly it was way to wordy for me and skimmed my way through it. It's an especially important read since Roe vs Wade was turned over. Every woman should read it.

  • Endless details of whatever.

Non-stop detailed descriptions of everything in sight for 9 chapters was all I could read before giving up on interest in the story.
