    About this product

    Product Information

Summer 1942. When Bernie Gunther is ordered to speak at an international police conference, an old acquaintance has a favour to ask. Little does Bernie suspect what this simple surveillance task will provoke... One year later, resurfacing from the hell of the Eastern Front, a superior gives him another task that seems straightforward: locating the father of Dalia Dresner, the rising star of German cinema. Bernie accepts the job. Not that he has much choice - the superior is Goebbels himself. But Dresner's father hails from Yugoslavia, a country so riven by sectarian horrors that even Bernie's stomach is turned. Yet even with monsters at home and abroad, one thing alone drives him on from Berlin to Zagreb to Zurich: Bernie Gunther has fallen in love.

      • A good man in a bad place

I have really enjoyed the Philip Kerr novels, but be warned they form a sequence or series that allows the reader to develop a better understanding of the central character as the series progresses. That said, I have not been disappointed yet! I'm on my tenth book in the series and still find myself reading these novels voraciously. The author is meticulous in his research, and the characters and plot are layered and well thought out, providing an air of credibility and authenticity. The genre of a "good German", serving initially as a police officer during the rise of the Nazi's, and then as an Officer in the army, witnessing and participating, in the atrocities that were perpetrated by the Nazi's is well served by other authors too. I have read the Luke McCallin novels, (although Ben ...

      • One of the best of the brilliant Philip Kerr Bernie Gunther novels. Superb in every way!

Possibly my favourite of the 14 Bernie Gunther detective novels written by the late sadly missed Philip Kerr. I urge you to buy this book. But make sure you have read the others in sequence before hand A brilliant story based upon a combination of WW2 historical facts and beautifully written sharply paced novel. You are in for a treat!
