A book about time; or, put another way, a book about how Pilgrim (and Vonnegut) became unstuck in time and how this 'unsticking' created 'Slaughterhouse-Five'... Roston [casts] himself as part literary scholar and part psychoanalytic sleuth., Part biography, part literary interpretation, and part fan notes, The Writer's Crusade is a spellbinding reexamination of both Slaughterhouse-Five and its author, Kurt Vonnegut. Although the emphasis of this marvelous book is on PTSD, Tom Roston never loses sight of the intuitive, imaginative genius of a boldly original prose stylist. Any Vonnegut enthusiast, and anyone interested in the sources of fine literature, will find pleasure in these pages., Mr. Roston gives the reader a book that encompasses many things -- simultaneously biography, literary analysis, an inquiry into the creative process, and a concise history of the perception and recognition of war trauma and the development of the concept of post-traumatic stress disorder. He writes with informed insight as well as wit, and his tone is light and engaging despite the seriousness of the subject.... 'The Writer's Crusade' provides a thoughtful head start for a renewed appreciation of the author and his best-known work., "A book about time; or, put another way, a book about how Pilgrim (and Vonnegut) became unstuck in time and how this 'unsticking' created 'Slaughterhouse-Five'... Roston [casts] himself as part literary scholar and part psychoanalytic sleuth."-- The Washington Post, The best thing that Roston does...is to give context to the question of whether Slaughterhouse-Five is an autobiographical portrait of Vonnegut's own war trauma. Roston writes in depth about the novel itself and how it came to be written... Roston also provides a history of war trauma and how our understanding of it has evolved over the years.

Synopsis
Journalist Tom Roston's The Writer's Crusade is the story of Kurt Vonnegut and Slaughterhouse-Five , an enduring masterpiece on trauma and memory. "A book about time; or, put another way, a book about how Pilgrim (and Vonnegut) became unstuck in time and how this 'unsticking' created Slaughterhouse-Five . . . Roston [casts] himself as part literary scholar and part psychoanalytic sleuth." -- Washington Post Kurt Vonnegut was 20 years old when he enlisted in the United States Army. Less than two years later, he was captured by the Germans in the single deadliest US engagement of the war, the Battle of the Bulge. He was taken to a POW camp, then transferred to a work camp near Dresden, and held in a slaughterhouse called Schlachthof Fünf where he survived the horrific firebombing that killed thousands and destroyed the city. To the millions of fans of Vonnegut's great novel Slaughterhouse-Five, these details are familiar. They're told by the book's author/narrator and experienced by his enduring character Billy Pilgrim, a war veteran who "has come unstuck in time." Writing during the tumultuous days of the Vietnam conflict, with the novel, Vonnegut had, after more than two decades of struggle, taken trauma and created a work of art, one that still resonates today. In The Writer's Crusade, author Tom Roston examines the connection between Vonnegut's life and Slaughterhouse-Five . Did Vonnegut suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder? Did Billy Pilgrim? Roston probes Vonnegut's work, his personal history, and discarded drafts of the novel, as well as original interviews with the writer's family, friends, scholars, psychologists, and other novelists including Karl Marlantes, Kevin Powers, and Tim O'Brien. The Writer's Crusade is a literary and biographical journey that asks fundamental questions about trauma, creativity, and the power of storytelling., Kurt Vonnegut was twenty years old when he enlisted in the United States Army. The seller was very responsive and answered me on a timely matter. The product itself came in its packaging and was new, not used at all. The packaging was not beat up or anything, safely delivered to my mailbox. No mix ups and zero stress with delivery. The price for the product is completely understandable for the product. I really appreciate the seller and I am very happy to have purchased through this seller. Completely trustable!

Leaving positive feedback because 1) item was packed well & arrived as described 2) seller did give partial refund when subsequent price dropped below org purchase price. 3) communication was quick However, there was a downside to this transaction -item listed as in-stock but ended up waiting nearly a month for them to get it from their distributer then ship it to me (bought June 29th, arrived around July 21). Auction said 12-15 days. Better clarity would have prevented lot of frustration
