If you love looking at Gargoyles when visiting a church, Abbey or other religious building as I do…it’s fascinating if you can learn the story about the stone mason/s responsible, I’ve had great amusement learning how a dispute between works Forman and Stone Mason has resulted in the facial features resembling that Forman, or the Bishop, Abbot or whoever was at odds with that Mason. If you look up a sketch of said Bishop or whoever, you can sometimes see exactly what I mean! Gargoyles are always such comical characters, and you can weave stories around them. I visited Norte Dame Cathedral in Paris before the terrible fire they had, and a gargoyle done as a replacement on an older part had been made to resemble The hunchback of Norte Dame, holding a rope attached to a carved bell…quite clear who he was made to look like. So you step into another world of mystery abd detective work, and it’s really interesting.
A fascinating book, written by Mike Harding (polymath extraordinary), giving a great introduction to what is probably a vast subject. Well-written, thorough and amusing. Makes me want to check out local churches with a binocular and my telephoto lens!
