This was a fantastic musical so disappointed when it closed ! Had planned to see it multiple times just as we have Les Mis .Pity no DVDs were made as we would love to see it again - we have the CD and listen to it often .

This is the third album in the Boubil/Schonberg 'trilogy' including Les Mis and Miss Saigon, and honestly not the best. Pros: - All the lead singers are fantastic. - The overture is beautiful. It should really be on a musical that follows up on it's promise. - Some great, catchy songs. Cons: - Some godawful songs (Sleeping on our Own and 'Louison'... just NO) - The character who's in love with a scarecrow. - The plot is quite complicated to follow, and some songs feel a little pointless. This album has ended up with an average rating because I still can't decide how I feel about it. I bought it for a specific performer (Jerome Pradon), and to be honest the first few times I listened I thought it was quite bad. But somehow, it's grown on me. Maybe in a few months I'll regret this, and say it's a 4 or 5/5.Read full review
it is true that this musical did not live up to the Miss Saigon or Les Mis, they were outstanding in their time and still stand the test of time even now. However its not all bad but you really do have to listen to this cd a number of times before it grows on you. It was the same when me and my partner went to see the show, first time we were disappointed second time it was fantastic, its the same with the cd. There are a couple of poor songs but also some great songs with very strong performances from the lead roles. The storyline is at times a little confusing but stick with it, you will be rewarded.
I studied Martin Guerre at the NODA summer school this year, I bought a cd before hand thinking I would be getting a headstart. Unfortunately I didn't know about all the rewrites and my 1999 cd was vastly different from the musical ast it currently stands. If you want to know the musical you need to listen to both cd's, both are fantastic. Some of the songs from the original have gone, some have been in and then out and then put back in again ! Who knows if the writers will ever be happy with their work but I hope so it is too good not to be heard.
