About this product

Product Information

Anyone who has read Jon Krakauer's famous account of the 1996 Everest disaster, INTO THIN AIR, will remember the story of Beck Weathers: the gregarious Texan climber who went snow-blind in the Death Zone below the summit and who spent a night out in the open during a blizzard that took the lives of a dozen colleagues and friends. Even as he staggered back into Camp 4 the next morning, Beck's condition was such that the other survivors assumed he would not make it back down the mountain. He was effectively left for dead, but drawing upon reserves of determination and courage he didn't know he had - as well as the extraordinary selflessness and bravery of a Nepalese helicopter pilot he'd never met - he finally made it to safety. Only then could a new battle begin: to rebuild his life with a family he'd taken for granted for too long. Heartstoppingly exciting and ultimately very moving, LEFT FOR DEAD is a terrific read.

  • Not what I was expecting

Well this book started out as a good read, having watched the film with Jake Gyllenhaal, I was fascinated and wanted to read a bit more. The book then steers a away from the events on everest and meanders through Becks life story which is not that interesting to me. Hoping 1 of the other books I bought by other mountaineers about that expedition will be more interesting.

  • The Everest part of this book is worth reading, the rest is not sadly!

There is no doubt that Beck is an amazing inspiring guy and who could not be gripped by this obvious epic adventure that turns its fortune to tragedy. However, I have read all of the accounts of the 1996 tragedy, apart from The Climb (which is next) and this sadly is the one that i was drifting off too. Not because of his story of Everest but because of his stories of everything else non-Everest. I was lost on all of the family and friend stories, they are not why I bought the book andI found myself skimming ahead to try to find something more interesting. He seems to ramble off on things that are just totally uninteresting and unrelated to the true storyline. The 3 stars are for his Everest story, strength, bravery and unbelievable courage and the fact that he does seem like a really ...

  • Good value for money and great entertainment!

I bought this book as part of an ongoing fascination with all things mountain climbing. I have read various first hand accounts of the events on Everest in 1996, and this story adds an additional perspective from the point of view of someone who was lucky to survive. The story gives a great deal of insight into what drives someone to risk it all, just to able to say ''I climbed Everest''. It also looks at the impact on loved ones who probably suffer the most. An absorbing read and highly recommended. The book was in good condition and represented great value for money.
