The melancholy dignity of Astarloa and the tragedy in which he is entangled are superbly realised by Perez-Reverte. The Fencing Master was his first novel and shows all the ability to combine a thrilling and deviously-plotted story with characters of depth and complexity which has characterised his later fiction.
