A film of two halves
The first part of this film is more like a romantic comedy. Roberto Benigni,a comedian,much like an Italian version of Robin Williams,plays a waiter,Guido, who first falls in love with,then marries a woman already engaged to somebody else. Benigni perhaps tries too hard to be funny at first and to be honest i found it hard to warm to him in this role. However,the film comes to life when the couple,including young son Joshua get transported to a concentration camp when life is threatened when living under German occupation during World War Two. To try and disguise the horrors of life in the camp from son Joshua,Guido pretends they are merely going on some sort of vacation and invents a game whereas if Joshua does as he is told he collects points towards the main prize of winning his very ... A deserving Oscar winner
This is a great movie, though perhaps not as great as it seemed when it was first released. The relationship between Guido and his son, the way he always manages to make him laugh and the circumstances in which the story unfolds, make this a hugely poignant movie, right to the end when... ...no, that would spoil it! Suffice to say, this is one of THOSE movies that everyone ought to watch, one of genuine quality that will make you laugh, make you cry but, above all, should make you think.This is a great movie, though perhaps not as great as it seemed when it was first released. The relationship between Guido and his son, the way he always manages to make him laugh and the circumstances in which the story unfolds, make this a hugely poignant movie, right to the end when... ...no, that would spoil it! Suffice to say, this is one of THOSE movies that everyone ought to watch, one of genuine quality that will make you laugh, make you cry but, above all, should make you think.

A beautiful film
This film takes a while to get into but stick with it. At first the father seems a bit of an idiot and way over the top and although the theme seems a bit farcical and is played out in a slightly slapstick way, I was soon intrigued, then captivated and by the end was in tears at the beauty and sensitivity of it.
