About this product

Product Information

Seventeen-year-old Igby Slocumb (Kieran Culkin) comes from a wealthy but dysfunctional family. His mother (Susan Sarandon) is a pill-popping lunatic, his brother (Ryan Phillipe) is a collegiate, money-obsessed snob, and his father (Bill Pullman) is a hospitalized schizophrenic. After Igby is expelled from boarding school, his mother sends him to a military academy where he is brutalized by the other kids. He escapes to the Hamptons, where he meets Sookie Sapperstein (Claire Danes), an enigmatic and artistic vegetarian on a break from Bennington College. Igby then goes to New York, where he holes up in the loft of the heroin-addicted mistress (Amanda Peet) of his reptilian godfather D.H. (Jeff Goldblum). He once again runs into Sookie, and the two begin an affair, which eventually falls apart as Igby realizes that he has never had anyone to trust, and he decides to try and change his life for the better. Burr Steers' impressive debut is clearly inspired by THE CATCHER IN THE RYE, though his film takes more pains to graphically show the familial reasons for its young protagonist's instability. At times a black comedy and sometimes something darker, IGBY creates a world where everyone's warmth and humanity is inversely proportional to their wealth--and most of the characters have money to spare. Culkin deftly carries an altogether impressive cast filled with strong performances.

    AN ALL TIME FAVORITE INDIE FILM

    this was a must have for my video library. such a good film. Bill Pullman, Claire Danes, Kieran Culkin, Ryan Phillippe, Susan Sarandon, jeff goldbloom, need i say more? a wonderful group of actors that make this a really enjoyable, moving, spectacular movie. Igby grabs my soul and does not let go. i wish to follow him to california to see what he does with his life. the pivitol death bed scene always gets to me. one whom has a love-HATE relationship with her mother i can totally relate to IGBY'S plight and reaction to his mother's death. kieran plays igby superbly! sookie saperstine and igby! watching this movie is time well spent.

    Intolerable, Infectious Igby

    One night, flipping channels, caught the tail end of the indi-ish movie with Kieran Culkin, Susan Sarandon and others. No ending title so did some research and found out it was Igby Goes Down. Now that I have seen it in its entirety, I am happy it is in my collection of annual must see movies along with my Woody Allen Collection. A refreshing bit of reality where things are, well, real. Great cast. One caution...Susan Sarandon's opening breathing dialogue, sticks with you and, well, freaked me out. Still in my head.

    Great Movie, more of an indie film which is my favorite

    I love the story its so unique. A young man striving for independence, while being a rebel and fighting against his crazy family. The Cast is fantastic which includes many faces you wouldnt expect in an indie film, Claire Daines, Ryan Phillipe, and Susan Surrandon. I saw this movie a year or two ago and i was browsing through dvd titles i saw it and i had to buy it. Two Thumbs up everyone needs to see this movie

    My favorite movie!

    This is one of my very favorite movies, mostly because of my love for Kieran Culkin. About five years ago, some one borrowed then lost my copy of Igby Goes Down and I haven't been able to find a replacement, the DVD is no longer available in stores. I was very excited to find this item on eBay at such a low cost, I'm happy to have it back in my library and can't wait to watch it again and again.
