My professor said as long as the homeworks were the same as 2nd Ed., which is the current recommended textbook and very popular, it was OK. Sure enough, it checked out, and at a price that saved me close to $100 off the 2nd Ed! (Even just the cost of renting was close to 3 times as much!) The book is very readable, peppered with exercises throughout, an answer key, a glossary for phonetic terms, and a CD-ROM with audio samples to better learn and practice transcription. There are very minor differences between this and the 2nd Ed. - even in the homeworks, but minor enough so that it was acceptable to the professor. This has been my experience, so it's worthwhile to ask the professor if you can use the 1st Edition - why pay 7 - 8 times as much (you can ask them before the semester, which is what I did)?Read full review
