Can be better than it claims to be, with the right connector and software.
I use the JP1 remote web site, easily found, and click through to the forum. On that site, they show you how to get a cable that can plug onto the 6 pins inside the battery case, like the one in my photo. You can download some free software, which enables you to set up the remote from your computer. It runs on any computer that can run Java, so that's Windows, Linux or Mac. This software enables the following: ★ Control up to 8 devices instead of 6. ★ Put macros on Activity buttons (for example, to enable you to switch on the devices needed). The remote can set up multiple numeric macros with a long press on one of the 4 colour buttons, as a "favourites" menu. But the software can: ★ Set up any device-specific macro on most keys, so the short press uses the key's normal function, the ... For example, for my BluRay device, the Stop key: Short press, Stop. Long press, Eject. The remote can set up a "Timed Macro" where the "App" buttons can record a series of key presses and play them back when pressed again. But with the software you can: ★ Make the Timed Macro specific to individual devices, i.e., different depending whether you are in, say, BluRay or TV mode. You can also use the App keys for normal remote commands. ★ If you run out of keys for any device, you can have Shifted-keys, where you press the Setup button briefly, then another key. The above functions are specific to this particular remote and maybe one or two others, but any URC-made remote with the 6 pins in the battery compartment can also be programmed by the software to have any key layout, which you can design. Often with universal remotes, some keys are not used, and certain signals are missing. The "learning" function on this remote, can grab the signals off the original remote, decode them, which will give you the information needed to design your own layout. And I've probably missed a few things! Even without all this extra power, it's a nice remote. It handles well, and is backlit. There's a handy key right at the bottom of the remote to switch the backlight function on and off. In a dark room, press this once to turn backlighting off, and again to turn it back on, lighting up all the keys in the process.
