The 3rd Birthday is a noir shooter adventure for grown-up gamers, from leading Japanese publisher Square-Enix. Players blast gruesome enemies in third-person shooter combat, as they follow a psychological thriller plotline through survival-horror settings. In surreal situations, too delicate for a run-and-gun approach, proper use of cover (and a few well-thrown grenades) can mean the difference between success and failure. The game's title refers not to an anniversary date, but to actual third "birth" of the main character: Aya Brea. Beginning a new chapter in the Parasite Eve series, The 3rd Birthday sends the gifted New York City detective back through time to awaken in the past with a versatile new talent. She finds herself in a devastated city, under attack from an alien presence known as "the Twisted." In addition to her skills with conventional weapons, Aya's main supernatural power in the game, known as Overload, is the body-swapping ability to take possession of other characters she encounters. She gains the strengths and skills of the people she possesses, and may remain in their bodies for as long as they can survive. For desperate situations, the game also features a "Liberation" mode, which can be triggered when a damage meter is filled. Speed increases greatly and damage-per-second soars.

    Fun third person shootet

    Very high polish, great graphics with stellar cinematics. Gameplay still holds up as well. Not your typical parasite eve but a very fun game none the less. Recommend if you can snag it for a good deal.

    Not meant for handhelds or Parasite Eve fans

    Want something that betrays the spirit of Parasite Eve and completely misses the point of the main character? Then The Third Birthday is for you! While the gameplay isn't that bad, the lack of a second analog stick is annoying, and abilities can hardly be used manually. Instead, you use a DNA board to randomly get abilities, and retry for hours just to get what you want, and most activate randomly! The game is made to be played multiple times, but going through it once was painful enough. And the story is where the game just becomes incoherent, relying on the player to constantly read the notes/datalogs to find out what the hell is going on. And as stated earlier, very few past characters are used in this game, and the new ones hardly have anything to them as plot points are dropped. Now ...

    Excellent individual game

    I loved that Square Enix brought back Aya Brea. The game itself has good graphics (for a PSP game), an interesting story and good kinematics, although the control (thanks to the limitations of PSP) becomes complicated on occasion. The bad news is, as a sequel to Parasite Eve, it leaves something to be desired. They tried to create a sequel that had nothing to do with the previous installments, and they created a game that, although good, would have looked better as a completely new game, instead of a sequel that has little to do with previous installments, to the point that you don't need to know anything about the previous games to play this one. Despite my criticism of history, I absolutely recommend it.
