Synopsis
Josef "Sepp" Allerberger was the second most successful sniper of the German Wehrmacht and one of the few private soldiers to be honoured with the award of the Knight's Cross. An Austrian conscript, after qualifying as a machine gunner he was drafted to the southern sector of the Russian Front in July 1942. Wounded at Voroshilovsk, he experimented with a Russian sniper-rifle while convalescing and so impressed his superiors with his proficiency that he was returned to the front on his regiment's only sniper specialist. In this sometimes harrowing memoir, Allerberger provides an excellent introduction to the commitment in fieldcraft, discipline and routine required of the sniper, a man apart. There was no place for chivalry on the Russian Front. Away from the film cameras, no prisoner survived long after surrendering. Russian snipers had used the illegal explosive bullet since 1941, and Hitler eventually authorised its issue in 1944. The result was a battlefield of horror. Allerberger was a cold-blooded killer, but few will find a place in their hearts for the soldiers of the Red Army against whom he fought., Josef "Sepp" Allerberger was the second most successful sniper of the German Wehrmacht and one of the few private soldiers to be honoured with the award of the Knight's Cross. An Austrian conscript, after qualifying as a machine gunner he was drafted to the southern sector of the Russian Front in July 1942. The Devil's Playground.

It shows just how brutal the Russian front was in WWII.. it doesn't hold back, and sugar coat it.

    • Sniper on the Eastern Front, Sepp Allerberger

Absolutely the very best sniper book written from German side. This is a real story of a real soldier that became a top sniper (scharfschutzen) and how it happened. His real exploits are faascinating reading for anyone that loves history and the military. This is a book I will read over and over again in, and never get tired of reading it again as there is something I pick up on missed before. Sepp Allerberger also compares the diffearnt sniper rifles he used and shows the reasons for his favorites. He used a captured Russian M91/30 Mosin Nagant bolt action sniper rifle at first, and mostly used it throughout his service. His tactics are an insight into how men adapt in war and ways they use to survive. Highly recommend this book for every history buff, military hsitorian, and weapons ...

    • Sniper On The Eastern Front

This is one of my favourite books. The German Sniper, of which we dont know his real identity and for the sake of this book has been called Sepp Allerberger takes us through his WW2 experiences. He starts as a machine gunner and then gets wounded and finds a Russian sniper rifle although not stated in the book proberly a Mosin Nagant rifle with telescopic sight. Later in the book he recieves a Kar98 rifle with telescopic sight and a Gewehr 43 self loading rifle. This book is very gruesome and every kill is described in horrific detail. Russian soldiers resorting to canibleism, rape and murder are described vividly in this account. Every page has a new horror to absorb. Overall this is an excellent book and a rare subject that I would highly recommend.
