  • Best Plath biography

This is an absolutely compelling book. I know the story of her life well but this adds so much more. Humane and compassionate and highly detailed, it does not to blame Hughes or judge Plath's mental illness as "narcissistic attention-seeking" as so many of her worst biographers have attempted to do. The book is about 940 pages long (with footnotes which are mainly about detailed citations of sources). I found I was reading 100 pages or more a day, and once the book was over I felt quite bereft! Very highly recommended.
