About this product

Product Information

The army looks like a pretty fun place to be in this goofy curio from 1942. What there is of a story follows some lucky recruits as they go through a basic training that consists mostly of attending USO dances headlined by the Andrews Sisters (the hit girl group of their day) and the hot trumpet of bandleader Harry James. There's also some fancy footwork from "The Jivin' Jack & Jills." Drill Sergeant Shemp Howard tries hard to convince the boys to take the war seriously, but new recruit Dick Foran is much too busy wooing the Colonel's daughter (Jennifer Holt). The film concludes with a rousing montage of war mobilization footage as the Andrews Sisters sing "We've Got a Job to Do." Other songs include "Six Jerks in a Jeep," "Tell It to the Marines," and "You're in the Army Now." This is a very interesting mix of comedy, songs, and enlistment propaganda from veteran comedy director Eddie Cline (THE BANK DICK, MY LITTLE CHICKADEE).

Card sold looked legitimate from the pictures uploaded, possible image editing applied to furthermore convince. Seller did not specify card was a fake and I was sad to find out it was fake when receiving and opening the envelope.

Game was wrapped thoroughly in bubble wrap and packaged very well. The disc did pop out of place in shipping but doesn't seem to have sustained any damage. Seller can prevent this in the future by cutting a small square of bubble wrap and placing on top of disk before closing box and packing. I would definitely buy from this seller again.

  • Only for fans of The Andrews Sisters and Shemp Howard

I've always been a fan of The Andrews Sisters in their early days, so I ordered this DVD, not knowing quite what to expect. The visual quality of the DVD itself was average, meaning it wasn't a studio transfer, more likely taken from a reasonable quality 16mm print. The sound appeared to have been cleaned up though, and was good. The best number was "Underneath the Apple Tree" with the remainder of the songs being instantly forgettable. The story itself was pretty much carried by Shemp Howard, a much underrated actor outside of his 3 Stooges appearances. Dick Foran, a good singer but abysmal actor, always grates on my nerves! I can recommend this DVD for fans of The Andrews Sisters and Shemp Howard only.

  • Patriotic big band bash.

Great big band music, supplied by Harry James. Also the Andrews Sisters are at their best. Fun skits along the way and very patriotic with the war going on.

  • Private Buckaroo

Bought this for a person who follows the history and personally knew Harry James. Great music and shots of the band. Acting is typically Hollywood but you overlook that to enjoy the music of Harry and the Andrew Sisters. Recommend for any fan of the Big Bands...
