A Failure For Me
Since nobody ever uses PDAs or Pocket PCs any more... I was hoping that this keyboard would work as a wireless remote keyboard for my Arduino MEGA2560. I hitched-up an IRRemote Sensor to pin 11, ran a Sketch I had made to utilize TV remote controls, and put batteries into this keyboard. The reason I thought this keyboard might be able to be used was, every TV remote sent understandable binary information to the Arduino that could be given unique values for each key press. After turning on the keyboard, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Arduino sensor was receiving IR from the keyboard (an LED lights up on the sensor whenever you press or release a key). Unfortunately, the numbers that were received seemed random. Different key presses would send the same code, sometimes (but ... Since nobody ever uses PDAs or Pocket PCs any more... Unfortunately, the numbers that were received seemed random. Different key presses would send the same code, sometimes (but not all the time). Sometimes the same key press would send different numbers. Still not discouraged, I was hoping that certain bits (of the total 32 received bits) would contain ASCII codes for the characters typed. I viewed each 8-bit packet being sent; but, no such luck. Even when the RAW code that was being sent was analyzed, each 8-bit part of the 32-bit code was indecipherable. When each 8-bit segment was received, they, also, would vary with three-or-four possible values whenever a key was pressed (same values as other keys gave). Also didn't seem to represent any simple row/column value. Oh well. Definitely no simple, "Sends ASCII on certain bits" as I had hoped. Also, can't be that it's needing some sort of handshake because it only has an IR output. So, if you are hoping that this keyboard will be able to be used on an Arduino with an IR Receiver Sensor... no such luck (unless you figure-out or know what the keyboard is expecting the PDA to do. The answer can't be that it just sends a fixed code for every key that is pressed, even if some bits change to tell the computer something more detailed, at different times). This is why this keyboard is being sold for a penny with $6 shipping (it's relatively heavy). Doesn't work with anything above Windows XP, even if you were trying to use it for its intended use. A hopeful experiment which failed. Can't imagine selling it on E-Bay, either. There are a ton of them out there for 1 cent (and others trying to, still, get $129 for them. hah! Yeah, sure...)
