Additional Information
Kenneth Branagh makes his directorial debut and also plays the title role in HENRY V, an ambitious film that began a resurgence of interest in films of Shakespeare's plays. Henry is a young king seeking a way to make his mark on history. He gets his chance when he learns he can make a legal claim to the throne of France. He does, and arrives in France with a small army that soon meets with violent resistance from the French. The film follows Henry and his men through the brutality of 15th-century warfare as the ragtag band confronts heavy opposition and their own destinies on a rainy French battlefield. The film expertly balances the thrilling heroics of the battle sequences with the painful and complex reactions of men who are sometimes unsure of the justice of their cause. True to Shakespeare's original text, an unnamed Chorus (Derek Jacobi) appears periodically, filling in details and offering a running commentary on the action. Featuring a cast that includes Ian Holm, Paul Scofield, Judi Dench, Emma Thompson, Robbie Coltrane, Christian Bale and many other screen stars, HENRY V is a rousing, fascinating film about the power of courage and the price of glory.

    Henry V Mk2

Comparisons with Laurence Olivier's wartime film are inevitable, but whereas Olivier's production was deliberately intended to raise the morale of wartime Britain, Kenneth Branagh had no such mission, and instead is able to present an altogether more realistic portrait of the Battle of Agincourt in all its bloody, muddy suffering. That said, both versions offer beautifully spoken and visually spectacular accounts of Shakespeare's play, and are crammed with the cream of contemporary acting talent: here including Branagh himself, Judi Dench, Robert Stephens, Richard Briers, Paul Scofield, Derek Jacobi, Ian Holm, Emma Thompson, Alec McCowen, Robbie Coltrane, Brian Blessed and Christian Bale.

  • Excellent acting throughout, and very enjoyable, very accessible Shakespeare

This version has a more "realistic" feel than the Laurence Olivier film which seems more theatrical, though they are both very enjoyable. A young Kenneth Branagh seemed to be good for the part of Henry V, who was I believe 29 at the time of the battle, and I found his portrayal quite moving at times. Emma Thompson was a believable medieval princess, very attractive but not too "pretty". Excellent acting throughout, and Richard Briers nose was spellbinding.

  • Quite a good film

Not quite as good as the 1944 version with Laurence Olivier, especially the "arrow swarm" scene.

  • As titled.

    Great film on Shakespeare.

  • Best version of Henry V

I love this film, the acting, the production and of course the dialogue. Look out for a very early performance from Christian Bale.
