    An interesting selection

    Opening with a bright stereo recording of Bob Lander with The Spotnicks this is a good selection taken from one of the least know British labels of the time. The sleeve notes concentrates on the latter years of activity and particularly the Motown connection. Twenty tracks are of Motown or other American origin and include both sides by Mike and the Modifiers, the first white group to be signed to Motown (issued on GORDY 7006), and now a very rare item. Their biggest home-grown star was Maureen Evans who has several tracks here, including her cover of 'The Big Hurt' (though I personally prefer the Joan Small recording on Parlophone). Unlike some other discs in this series there are more female artists here; like Jackie Trent, Susan Singer, Jackie Lee, Christine Quaite and Nancy Whiskey. ...
