James the Red Engine
These books are by the Rev'd W. Awdry who was the original author and inventor of the "Thomas and Friends" series. There are different versions of these books, which have different illustrators. This particular book is from the books that are illustrated in a cartoon style. Some of the other books like this are illustrated in an impressionist style, which some say is more evocative. Following the success of the little picture books, a TV series using Gauge 1 models was made. After that, a Computer Generated Image ("CGI") series was that introduced characters, stations and places that do not feature in the original books.
