  • subtle, beautiful, haunting....amazing

key tracks.. sicknote (untitled track 12) emily rose lost without you from the opening lyrics "green eyed monster..." and dreamy acoustics. this album draws you in instantly, and never lets you go. the sparse instruments, laid back melancholy and poignant lyrics only serve to give stephen fretwell the vehicle in which to carry his soaring, emotive voice. the album burns away nicely, but by the time you reach the golden cluster of songs rose, lost without you and the single emily, you know that this album is something special. the guitar on rose haunts you as stephen sings about the perfect date, while the bittersweet lyrics in emily, give the impression of a lover he would rather forget, but yet he cant simply resist. the album carries on nicely, and when it hits the ...

  • Fretwell - A Honest Songwriter

After reading about Stephen Fretwell in a magazine I instantly comparing him to other singer/songwriters (James Blunt, Damien Rice) But I realised that the album "Magpie" was infact a understated masterpiece. Opening track "Do You Want To Come With?" is a gentle piece fuelled by a acoustic guitar, a solitary piano and well contructed synth's. Gem's on the album include "Run" "New York" "Emily" and my personal favourite "Play" with I think is a magnificent song to relax to. "Lines" is a song which could easily be passed of as a great Bob Dylan song. Fretwell is a honest songwriter and I think he deserves all the credit he can get.
