Hidden gem
Half Nelson seems like a bit of a hidden classic; everyone I mention it to has never heard of it, and I always strongly recommend checking it out. It shows the story of a drug addict teacher; full of energy and enthusiasm in the classroom, whilst his time outside of school is spent scoring his next hit. One day a pupil finds him passed out in the locker room, and the two strike an unlikely bond, that gets tested throughout the film as they both try and overcome the obstacles in their lives. This film is utterly charming, and achieves a sense of awkwardness between the pair that feels completely natural in every way. This is not an action film of a full of laughs comedy, however this is an excellent film if the above are not your main criteria for a film. It is an interesting view into the life of a teacher in a tough inner city school. The kind of teacher who against the odds is able to inspire the young people in his class in his subject, history. However he hides a secret, he is addicted to drugs and his personal life is falling appart. When a young girl in his class walks in on him smoking crack they strike up an unlikely friendship. Often quiet and dark this if a film to really WATCH.This is not an action film of a full of laughs comedy, however this is an excellent film if the above are not your main criteria for a film. Bad Teacher, Great lessons.
Great flawed character study of a teacher at odds with his own demons and a redemptive need to help teach something of value to pupils that are under peer pressures and choices equally emotional. This film works by not being the typical goody two shoes teacher making a difference in "da hood" (dangerous minds) but a realistic performance of a bad man doing good things despite himself.

But what happens when one of those pupils discovers he definitely is not the clean cut and respectable person she thought. When the good guys are bad and the bad guys are glamourous, where do you turn. outstanding turns from all concerned but Gosling shines, this film breaks type and delivers heart wrenching moments without the sentimentality normally involved. see this film as soon as you cansleeper of the year, maybe the decade.
