The Nikon D70s has all the award-winning features that made its predecessor so popular - 6.1 effective megapixels for clear, sharp resolution; top shutter speed of 1/8000 second and 1/500 second flash sync; near-instant power-up of 0.2 seconds for incredible responsiveness - and more. The D70s features an advanced AF system; its exceptional subject acquisition, focus tracking and focus precision functions ensure that your action shots will be even crisper and sharper. Built-in i-TTL Speedlight automatically pops up when lighting is inadequate and provides fill flash when necessary. Extra wide peripheral illumination supports lenses up to 18mm, for beautiful wide angle shots. The large 2.0-inch LCD monitor is easy to view and use, with plain-language menus and help dialogs presented clearly. For better results when shooting close-ups and long exposures, use the optional Remote Cord (MC-DC1). Add to all of this the incredible performance of the rechargeable lithium-ion battery, powering up to 2500 shots per charge, and you have a superb digital SLR camera, always ready for action.Read full review
D70S' are still great cameras; good weight, durable and reliable, aside from apparently common "CHA" and other intermittent nuisance-type memory card issues/errors. Nikon probably could have done more to at least offer discount repair to resolve these issues. Sent mine in for estimate (Nikon Authorized Repair Center) and estimate was over $200.00 to replace a few parts that probably would fix all those intermittent error messages, etc., so I figured it was too old to bother "wasting" that much money. It got good use and still works anyway so I'll keep it and enjoy it until it craps out for good.
Wonderful camera with an Achilles heel. The compact flash system can outspeed the SD cards but the SD cards are so much more reliable. There are error codes shown which disables the camera, primarily CHR and -E-. All are fixable if you know the tricks. Google 'D70 error codes' for the fixes. Have bought several for less than $100 supposedly for parts only, broken and got them to work fine. Also got a D50 supposedly broken that just had a busted lens. Works fine. If you can find a D70s model which uses SD cards that's the one to get. D90?
The D70s is very easy to use. It takes great sharp photos, along with my Nikkor 18-55 mm VR lense. It's real easy to take professional shots with this camera . I have installed an 8 GIG Sandisk flashdisk ,and the D70S can take approximately 2400 shots in fine resolution mode. I also love that the camera is ready to shoot as soon as it's powered on. I'm very impressed with the auto focus in this unit, and it's build quality is awesome! I also own a D90 and I can tell you that the D70S will go as high as 1/8000 sec shutter speed, where my D90 will only go as high as 1/4000 sec. Even thoughthe D70s is 6.1 megapixel it's pictures are as good as my D90 or any of the 12.1 megapixels cameras on the market !!
The Nikon D70s is as good an excuse as any to dip your toe in the water and join the DSLR revolution. It provides almost everything that most photographers will ever need in a camera (digital or otherwise), whilst delivering fantastic ease of use and very impressive image quality. The Nikon D70s offers a wealth of features, fast and accurate operation and solid build quality at a price point that would have been difficult to believe only a couple of years ago. Negative points are few - it "only" has 6 megapixels (although this is more of a marketing thing than anything else), the Multi Selector arrow-pad is spongy and unresponsive, and the shutter release mechanism is on the noisy side. I thoroughly enjoyed using the Nikon D70s and would have no hesitation in buying this camera, if I didn't already have a substantial vested interest in Canon lenses! Highly recommended for advanced amateurs who are looking for more functionality than the cheaper entry-level DSLRs provide, or for the professional who requires a durable and hard-wearing back-up body.Read full review
