Donnie Darko Directors Cut - Sucked into the Wormhole?!
Donnie Darko, a cult classic, relying on the innitiative and creativity of the audience to base conclusions and theories on the plot and metophorical significances. The concept of this, is really denied with the Directors Cut version of Donnie Darko (which easily has a place in my top 5 films), with the audience 'spoon fed' the directors interpretation of the significance of key scenes, mainly the theory of time travel and the concept of tangent universes perceived in the film. Which in my opinion ruins the beauty of the film, as the original theoretical cut, did not include these extra scenes and on screen narative to explain what we had to explore in our own minds, creating this urge to watch it over and over again, giving rise to conversation and specualtion on the film with fellow ... Its frustrating as i can imagine the scenario..... Annoyed, bewieldered viewers, incompetant of independant originality to be put into their thoughts, expecting a film to not create confusion or god forbid the trivial concept of creative thought! So to respond to the critisism and scrutiny, Richard Kelly released this 'dumbed down' version 3 years later, to answer the call of the majority of viewers who were dissapointed with the film. It may also be due to the fact that the original in 2001 failed to break even at the box office (due to disinterest in the states, due to a release close to that of 9/11), a result of unfortunate timing. The musical score is changed and swapped about in the Directors Cut, with very poor choices of tracks, to replace perfectly chosen pieces of music in the theoretical version (for example Echo and the Bunnymen's Killing moon is replaced with an INXS track, which fundamentally destroys the opening sequence!.........i am being very harsh with this, as i am an original Donnie Darko fan, and refuse to accept these changes despite still being the work of a very talented director, Mr. Kelly) The best thing about this edition of the Directors cut, is the Bonus DVD, which contains behind the scenes footage of the 28 day filming campaign. With some various other features, that Die Hard Donnie Darko fans would appreciate. I hope this helps, it is a purchase and a necessity for DD fans, but id avoid this edition if new to the film, and want to expereince the film in all its glory, in which case id direct you to the original theoretical cut. When viewers are asked what the film is about, the numerous answers they come up with is amazing, and there are not many films that can do this. You take from Donnie Darko what you want to, depending on the type of person you are, what you feel is important in life, and your feelings when you watch the film. This is part of the attraction to Donnie Darko; everyone sees something different. Some will see a love story, some might see a science fiction film, others might see an 80s satire or a film about hope. The possibilities are endless. The story revolves around a troubled teenager named Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal) , who seems to those around him as a schizophrenic, who frequently visits a ... Donnie is visited by a large bunny rabbit called Frank, and often finds himself waking up in odd places after a night of sleepwalking. He finds his life difficult; feeling alone and with nobody to share his troubled world with, until one day when a new girl, Gretchen Ross (Jena Malone) , arrives at his school. The two find an instant connection and through a series of not-so-coincidences, discover each other's minds. When a jet engine falls into Donnie's bedroom one night whilst he is out sleepwalking, things take a turn for the slightly strange. The jet engine cannot be tracked down to any aircraft, which makes Donnie and everyone else around him wonder what is going on. I don't want to give away too much of the story to anyone who hasn't seen it yet, because I think discovering the film for yourself is the only way to do it. Let's just say Donnie performs some "tasks" in order to achieve the final result he desires. Acting is great all around, and you will find that Donnie Darko is essentially an ensemble piece, not only through acting but through the events of the story. Although Donnie takes a lot of the screen time, the other characters are vitally important to the plot if you look deep enough. The supporting cast are nothing intermediate either. Maggie Gyllenhaal gives a good performance as Donnie's sister (the two happen to be siblings in real life as well), Drew Barrymore gives her role as Donnie's English teacher an amazing level of depth and Patrick Swayze appears as Jim Cunningham, a self-help guru connected with Donnie's school. Other notable performances include Holmes Osborne and Mary McDonnell as Donnie's struggling parents, Noah Wyle as the science teacher and Katharine Ross as Donnie's therapist. Music in the film is very good, and I wouldn't normally notice such a thing. As Donnie Darko is set in 1988, you will hear a lot of 80s music playing through the scenes, which is actually a welcome relief to a lot of the films out nowadays and really casts a different light on the film. I wouldn't normally sit and listen to 80s music, but the music used just seems to fit Donnie's life and a lot of the scenes in the film. If you're like me and not particularly interested in the 80s music scene, don't worry, it only adds to the greatness of the film. Overall, a marvellous film that anyone can enjoy if they watch it a few times!

Donnie Darko is my favourite film so I'm always going to be a bit biased but it is fantastic. A great and original story of a boy called Donnie Darko(Jake Gyllenhall) who avoids a would-be fatal accident after his 'imaginary' friend Frank the Bunny Rabbit tells him the world will end in 28 days 6 hours 42 minutes and 12 seconds. Donnie then goes about changing the lives of his teachers, friends and family because he was supposed to have died. The film is full of great performances from a young cast (This is Seth Rogen's first feature film) and top class writing and directing from a still young Richard Kelly who has produced one of the most loved cult films in recent years. I implore you to watch this film, I have watched it more times than I can remember but I still enjoy it every time I ... October 2nd, 1988: just another ordinary day in Donnie Darko’s teen-aged existence. He’s taken his medication, watched Dukakis and Bush debate, and had dinner with the family. Then comes an outrageous accident. Out of the blue, a 2,000 pound jet engine plummets from the sky and crashes into Donnie’s bedroom, obliterating it. Luckily, Donnie isn’t in bed. Or is it luck? As Donnie begins to explore what it means to still be alive, and in short order to be in love, he uncovers secrets of the universe that give him a tempting power to alter time and destiny.
