In Karel Reisz's MORGAN: A SUITABLE CASE FOR TREATMENT, the wildly eccentric artist, Morgan, played with lunatic delight by David Warner, is driven over the edge when his ex-wife, Leonie (Vanessa Redgrave), with whom he is still smitten, announces that she plans to remarry. The focus of the film is tilted toward the comedic aspects of Morgan's exploits, (King Kong is his role model), as he desperately tries to win Leonie back from her posh--and sane--fiance Charles Napier (Robert Stephens). Morgan begins by living in his ex-wife's car outside her apartment, and things only get stranger from there.<BR>Enter Vanessa Redgrave, in her first major screen appearance, possessing the most wickedly innocent look imaginable. Although she firmly tells Morgan that their relationship is over, because she wants a normal life with Napier, she still engages in passionate sex with him. The other woman in Morgan's life is his mother (Irene Handl), a Trotskyite who sincerely believes that Morgan should be taking over the country. But even she can see that he has serious mental problems. MORGAN is, overall, a likable comedy about the artist representing the id in all of us. David Warner Goes Ape as Morgan!
Morgan - a Suitable Case for Treatment (1966) has long been one of my favourite films, although I haven't seen it in decades, so it was nice to revisit it, and have it in my collection. This is one of the off-beat comedies that proliferated in the sixties, and shows us how unique that decade was. There are some madcap scenes around the antics of the central character, Morgan Delt, a self-absorbed young artist, brilliantly played by David Warner. He has an obsession with apes, and a scene in which he dresses in a gorilla suit and crashes a wedding while on a motorcycle is one of the highlights (I sometimes wonder if this film led to him being cast in Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes, 25 years later). This copy is from a very good print, and the black and white photography is shown to ... Don't be misled by the jacket design - whoever pasted this up has clearly never seen the film - it makes it look like a serious drama about 'feelings'. It does have a poignancy about it, but it's buried under all the fun. Vanessa Redgrave (in her first major film role) gets top billing, mostly because her name is Redgrave, but, although she's fine in it, this is Warner's film.
