Totally absorbing.
Don't want to give too much away for those who haven't seen it. This is the most engaging thriller imaginable which involves you totally with empathy for the characters, sometimes chilling, sometimes tragic. Totally recommended.

Standard copy of the film, but what a film!
This is the Dutch original from 1988 and, in my opinion, the only one to watch. The American re-make lost the message somewhat, but director Sluizer really knows how to slowly build it up in this edition. I bought the film after seeing it many years ago on late night TV and I must admit that re-watching it altered some of my memories. It's not as tight and fast paced as I recall, nevertheless it's still nervy, macabre and a spooky experience. Based on the kidnapping of one half of a Dutch couple on a French holiday in the 80's, and the other's subsequent search, ranging from initially frantic, through desperate, to obsessive, the low budget and European aspect really adds to the atmosphere. This flm works because it is low-budget and it is excellently put together. For those expecting ... This is the Dutch original from 1988 and, in my opinion, the only one to watch. However, for those who want substance over style, who enjoy the art of acting and directing rather than the SFX art, try it. I suspect American Psycho copied much from this in terms of the killer's slow, perverse self-analysis, his seriously unhinged yet oh-so-normal mentality. A rare breed today, with the fear coming from the suggested, the inferences, rather than the direct "in-your-face" approach of so many recent films, it's subtleties are there for the discerning eye only. If you liked Jack Clayton's The Innocents (1961), based on the Henry James classic The Turn of the Screw (NOT the awful 1994 release!) or if you were ever terrified by the Jonathan Miller TV short Whistle and I'll Come to You (1968)then this is definitely for you. Finally, this is for those who want to see the film. The extras are sadly lacking and insubstantial and there's no fancy box set. However, I personally couldn't care less - the film itself is worth all that and more.
