  • THE DEFINITIVE WWII ARMY GENERAL AT WAR

This was George C Scott's tour de force - he won the best actor Oscar which he notoriously refused to accept. George S Patton was the most capable "blitzkrieg" General of the Allied armies of World War 2 and the most feared and respected by the German High Command. He was a natural leader of men, who inspired the loyalty and courage of his troops. He was sidelined for more than 10 months after a 'slappin' incident with a Private soldier who had PST or "shellshock", but returned to lead the drive through France into Germany and also to relive the siege of Caen during the Battle of the Bulge. Patton was an underrated General with real talent for thrusting forward through enemy defences. Probably the greatest USA General of all time and this epic movie captures some of the spirit and essence ...

  • Bold but gallant

Patton was one of America's greatest WW2 generals but he was also a pain in the neck to his superiors, had an immense ego, took bold but gallant risks and became famous for slapping a shell-shocked soldier who Patton called "a yellow belly". After hitting the whimpering private, Patton told the doctors in the ward who were caring for wounded soldiers to "get him out of this place of honour!" One of Patton's oft-quoted pieces of advice to the troops was "Never die for your country - let the other feller die for HIS country". George C. Scott is splendid as the general but, for the first time in the Oscar's history, refused to accept his Academy Award. Patton would have been proud of him.
