Alison Lohman (Things We Lost in the Fire) stars as Christine Brown, a bank loan officer who is confronted by an old gypsy woman who is being evicted from her house by the bank. After a misunderstanding the women attacks then curses Christine. From there things go from bad to worse as she is haunted by and afflicted by the demons the women cursed upon her. This movie is perhaps one of the scariest movies I have seen in a while, Director Sam Raimi pulls no punches when it comes to "gotcha" moments in this one and you do not know what to expect. Also starring in this movie are: Justin Long, Lorna Raver, Dileep Rao, Adriana Barraza, David Paymer and Reggie Lee. Its a good movie for a late night scare and I recommend it to anyone, especially with Halloween just around the corner.
Well Sam, what can I say? You really have a great deal of talent and I'm fascinated with your great sense of humor. I missed this at the theaters because it must of had limited billing. I seldom if ever pay 6.50 to 8.00 anytime to go to a new film unless it has the end of the world or something involved. I'm an avid Trekkie from 30 years back and I didn't even get excited about the newest film since it was meant to capture a new young audience. Drag Me To Hell is a great title for this film. If I didn't know any better, I would probably say that I identified greatly with the poor woman since I've felt cursed in the past, but not by an old witch. The button thing was pretty odd, and I knew she was going to have more trouble after the old gypsy witch died. Let's just say that a lot of vomiting up worms, blood, and a few great scenes of gum-biting and fist swallowing from the old destitute gypsy woman will keep you frosty. This film definitely will keep you laughing if you think the same way I do about crazy films with maniacal people in them. The bank theme seems to play really well with this curse thing. Hooray! I'll have to give this 3/5 since I don't think I'll watch this again anytime soon, but I probably will want to see it again in about 10 years. The film's real strength is its brisk pace. The action starts with a bang and rarely slows down, making for a very entertaining hour and a half (or so). The special effects are good, and scary, but not as extreme as Evil Dead. Of course the characters are cardboard and the plot thin, but this is a popcorn movie and it does what it is supposed to do very well. A strict, moralistic message underlies the plot, but that's not uncommon in horror. Overall, a scary and entertaining mainstream horror film.
If you are a fan of The Evil Dead 2 then you'll want to see this one. I won't go as far as saying it is as good as that cult classic but it's a close second. Maybe not quite as much hammy humor but it delivers the goods on the over-the-top gore (gory in that Evil Dead kind of way). Sammy also has more budget to work with here as well. Nice twist (you knew SOMETHING had to happen) at the end.
cool hooror movie a twist and bonus features
