Reviews
Hollywood Reporter - Nicely served on both sides of the camera, this is a concise and involving rendition of the story of a resilient young woman who comes into property in Victorian England's West Country and is courted by three suitors, all of whom have pluses and minuses., This Is London - [It] has one great strength: an outstanding performance in this difficult, perhaps fundamentally incoherent, role from Carey Mulligan, far more intense, compelling and modern than Christie, much more intimately filmed., The Times UK - With dashing redcoats, picturesque bucolic vistas and heaving bosoms aplenty, there is more than enough in Danish director Thomas Vinterberg's gorgeous adaptation of Thomas Hardy's classic novel to treat any lingering Poldark withdrawal symptoms.

Good story and well rounded characters - beautifully filmed

Purposely did not go to see this at the cinema as the reviews led me to expect it would not come up to the Julie Christie / Alan Bates film version of Hardy's novel which I loved when it came out. Was persuaded to buy it on eBay having seen Mattias Schoenaerts in another - totally different film- and wondered how he would tackle such an iconic figure as Gabriel Oak. The answer is not really in the Hardy idiom. Having said that and allowing for the fact that it is hardly 'authentic' I did enjoy the retelling of this bucolic tale and it did lead me back to the book. Never a bad thing.

  • Visually Beautiful Film

Beautiful to watch. This classic story has been transferred very well to screen and has much to commend it. The characters are good, the story engaging. The only criticism I have is the casting of Sergeant Troy who I thought was wooden and not a patch on Terence Stamp from the earlier version of this Hardy tale. Martin Sheen is wonderful as one of Bathsheba's suitors.

  • Great film.

I've also got the old Julie Cristie version, but this one is every bit as good. Some of the photography is even better this time. Thanks.

  • A ' must see ' movie

A brilliant story superbly acted by a cast of top notch characters. It goes on my 'best ever' list !!

  • A superior version

Better than the original version, starring Julie Christie and Terence Stamp, mainly because the lead roles with Carey Mulligan and Matthias Schoenaerts are much better cast. A great Thomas Hardy story, this film does it justice.
