Old 24" iMac's (circa 2008) have a common problem... the Nvidia video cards thermally cycle and develop intermittent connections, then the screen goes blank, making the iMac useless. I reflowed the board and the video came back to life, but didn't last more than a couple of months. I did this a couple of times. Then, I decided to reball the Nvidia BGA. I think I damaged the IC pulling it off of the board with a heat gun. At over 1000 pads, even with melted solder, the IC has a lot of stiction. I think I damaged the chip with too much heat. Anyway, I attempted to reball the IC. VERY time consuming. Reflowed it. The solder balls looked good, but it didn't work, probably because the chip was likely damaged. I bought the replacement video board, made sure all of the heatsink plumbing, airways, and temp sensors were right, reassembled and turned on.. ....Viola! Everything fine once again. Hopefully it will last awhile. If it doesn't, I wouldn't fault the board. This is a design flaw in this era of iMac.Read full review
