Intense horror movie that keeps you guessing who's next and really who done it. Argenta likes his victims in the natural presentation and completely surprised. Best scene is the "death in the park", which actually is conducted in a bedroom of a home. The title also goes with one of the paintings in this directors many movies. I would have liked to have seen move of the action in this scene vs being left to wonder, camera shifts and redirects then goes to the next scene without showing discovery of this crime and the investigation that would follow... Kinda like in the movie Tenebrae which is also one of my favorite classics that has a scene called "inappropriate love ignored" that ends in double murder/death. Keep the great movies coming out for many years to come. Suggested rentals or purchases would be "The Opera", The Player", and "Deep Red"Read full review
Just as George A. Romero redefined the zombie genre with “Night of the Living Dead”, Dario Argento’s directorial debut “The Bird with the Crystal Plumage” shaped the giallo genre. A first-rate masterpiece of Italian horror, the final fifteen minutes of “Bird” presented an ending so electrifying that it makes the big reveal in “The Sixth Sense” look dumb by comparison. Not bad for 29-year old novice. While vacationing in Rome, American writer Sam Dalmas witnesses an unsuccessful attack by a serial killer to murder the wife of a prosperous gallery owner. As the only prime suspect in the case, Sam becomes determined to locate the black-clad maniac much to the chagrin of his girlfriend Julia. Once the body count gets higher, the couple along with the police would discover something more horrifying beneath the darkness. This is such a problematic film, especially if it’s an Italian one, for me to analyze without giving away the crucial plot points as well as the meaning behind the painting. “Bird” would require multiple viewings to understand because Argento cleverly hides his clues for us to figure out on our own. Anyway, let’s get down to the performances and technical aspects. Not only the black-gloved killer in the film became a trademark, but it also featured a protagonist that would serve as Argento’s alter-ego. And Tony Musante would be the first actor in the long-line of these characters. He is downright perfect for the lead role as a mystery writer who perceptively gets drawn to the mystery. Suzy Kendall gives an admirable impression as his girlfriend who reluctantly doesn’t want anything to do what going on. As always the soundtrack from the legendary Ennio Morricone is stimulatingly creepy but lyrically expressive at the same time. Vittorio Storaro’s contribution to “Bird” is a visual feast of masterful widescreen compositions, unsettling close-ups and virtuoso camerawork. Now that I’m done blabbering on and on, you should check out “The Bird with the Crystal Plumage” right now. And I mean today!Read full review
