A comprehensive insight into the mind of this fabulous painter via a collection of letters (hundreds of them) that Van Gogh sent to his brother Theo who historically has been credited with providing Vincent both financial and moral support. The book leaves you free to draw your own conclusions as to what part both the happy and unhappy aspects of this mans life played in generating the genius inherent in his work, but for me two things clearly stand out: (1) He was a masterful writer, (2) He was unfathomably sensitive to the beauty of nature and life in general. Its a very good read from both a human interest and historical standpoint as you will come to know first hand, his sadness, frustrations, and disappointments that factored into his early death.
I recently finished reading "Lust For Life" and was amazed by Vincent's life. The book is based upon the letters written by Vincent to his brother Theo. I recommend reading "Lust for Life" before you read this collection of letters. It will make them much clearer and help you to understand the struggles he went through as a person and artist. An excellent and must read for all artists. He was a remarkable person and artist.
