An easy read
I'm a voracious reader but rarely of novels. I bought this because a friend gave me the other three books in this series and got this one (the first in the series) for completion. I am well into the book and it is an easy read; characters still being introduced and developed. It has prompted me to research the American Civil War for background and context and I am grateful for the prompt to learn a bit about that. If you have an interest in the US Civil War then this book will be great reading for you. It is factually accurate but Bernard Cornwall tells the story from the point of view of individual characters that brings the historical facts to life and makes for a more personal understanding of the dreadful and brutal period in US history.
