The Independent - Few have written so passionately about the power of love, Sunday Telegraph - Sumptuous, Sight And Sound - Lavish visuals and outstanding cast, The Times - An amazing celebration of the many kinds of love between men and women, New Yorker - It's a well-crafted, handsome period piece, and pleasant to watch
Additional Information
Gabriel Garcia Marquez's novel LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA straddles the line between pop and art, and manages to be both a bestseller and a literary masterpiece. With an excellent cast and a timeless story, Mike NewellÆs cinematic adaptation strives for that same balance. As a young man in 19th-century Colombia, Florentino Ariza (played primarily by Javier Bardem) falls in love with a beautiful woman named Fermina (Giovanna Mezzogiorno). But an overprotective father (John Leguizamo) and too much reality intrude on their romance, and Fermina marries a successful doctor, Juvenal Urbino (Benjamin Bratt). But a wedding ring--and the passing decadesùaren't enough to dissuade Florentino from his love, even as he beds hundreds of women as he tries to get over his undying passion.

Screenwriter Ronald Harwood (THE PIANIST) distills Garcia Marquez's novel--which spans more than 50 years and almost 400 pages--into an accessible film. The basic element of the bookùFlorentino's love for Fermina--remains intact, and it's driven by yet another excellent performance from Bardem. Fans who were impressed by his masterly turn as a cold-blooded killer in NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN will be pleasantly surprised that the Spanish actor can be just as adept playing a character driven by love. As in his previous work such as FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL and HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE, director Mike Newell has assembled another fine cast that also includes Liev Schreiber, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Hector Elizondo.

    • 52 years of waiting

I have to come clean....I am a great fan of Gabriel Garcia Marquez the Author of Love in the Time of Cholera. I first read this book in 1990 and have returned to it on a number of occasions since so I approached the film with a dread that the task before the makers and actors would prove just too much.I am glad to say that I just loved every moment.I particularly liked the way that they played with the humour not necessarily dwelling on it but using the visual and passing on. Another feature which I liked was the journey on the River Boat which brought to the viewer the truth of what would have happened in the time of cholera. Although the film had to use the book title because the book is such a classic, I have talked to a number of people who did not go to see it because the title put ...

    • Love In the Time of Cholera

First seen on Sky, I wanted to purchase this film for it's beautiful acting. The film is not as gruesome as it sounds, infact it is a tale of unrequited love. It tells the story of a sensitive, pure teenage man and what occurs when absence has torn away the woman he loves. A great girlie film, especially for those who are board with the 'American Teenage Dream' type romances that we are plagued with over and over again.

    • Good on atmosphere.

The film is good on the atmosphere of 19th century Cartegena and while it could never capture the complexity of the book it makes an excellent entertainment from a simplified version. This DVD has worth while director's comments on the compromises made.

Film keep flicking back and for, it was slow and i couldnt get into it, i can see now why it didnt make the cinemas
