fascinating plots, outstanding performances
This is a boxful of good entertainment. Writing as Barbara Vine, Ruth Rendell dispenses with detectives and instead she has you witnessing how crimes unfold, with a lot of sympathy for the perpetrators. Even if you're read the books, there's some amazing and outstanding performances here, most notably from the actress Celia Imrie, who takes you with her through false brightness to open joy and then into sorrow, loss and obsession, going way beyond what casual reading of the books might have suggested. British television drama at its very best, not least because it's giving scope to thoughtful and very watchable actors.This is a boxful of good entertainment.
