About this product

Product Information

Renaissance artists had a habit of encoding meanings into symbols - everything from bee-hives to centaurs. Sometimes these meanings in paintings, sculptures, buildings and literature drew upon a traditional symbolic repertoire, but often a more esoteric meaning was encoded - perhaps a hidden political message or an expression of heretical faith. Richard Stemp leads us through a wealth of examples - more than 100 works of art - each shown in all its glory and then deconstructed, or decoded, to interpret the symbols it contains. For all those who relish secret symbolism and conspiracies as well as lovers of the art of Renaissance Italy, this book will instruct and delight in equal measure.

    • Beautiful, heavy, old-style coffee-table book

This deserves five stars because it is a fine thing of its kind. Unfortunately I think that these large, heavy books are old technology. It is far too heavy to hold and you have to put it on a table or whatever, to read it. The pictures are beautiful, some of the full-page ones are spectacular. A feature of this book is that there are pages de-coding the various elements that make up hidden stories or meanings. This is done through highlighting sections of the picture and surrounding the highlighted areas with explanatory notes. I personally enjoy knowledge served up in “bite-sized chunks” like this. There is also an interesting text in the usual format, which makes very enlightening reading. I don’t know enough about art history to know whether the book would please academics, but I have ...
