Don't bother with this.Its a waste of time
The film is bloody awful. It has made it onto my top 10 worst films ever. I seriously wasn't expecting it to be this bad. The acting in this film is laughable. Why even turn up at the studio and make this load of rubbish it's so funny. I would give it no stars if I could but one star is the lowest mark you can give on this site. It gets a big fat zero from me.ZERO

THIS IS THE MOST PERFECT DON QUIXOTE - AND SO IS JOHN LITHGOW
This purchase was totally by chance. I had just seen John Lithgow on stage at the National Theatre. I saw many of his films and thought he was an excellent actor, but when I saw on the stage it was a revelation, he is an extraordinary performer. I got home and started looking on Ebay if there was anything with John Lithgow, and saw he had done Don Quixote. I had seen two other versions, the Russian one with the unforgetable actor Nikolai Cherkhasov, which was excellent. And the second one with Peter O'Toole and Sofia Loren in the musical, which I didn't like very much as it didn't really follow the book. John Lithgow's version is superb, and he "is" Don Quixote, the gentle old man, amazingly well read, who decides all of a sudden to leave his home and beloved niece to go out into the ... This purchase was totally by chance. I had just seen John Lithgow on stage at the National Theatre. The scene in which fights the demons which in reality are just windmills is just magic. His faithful servant, Sancho Panza is the delightful Bob Hoskins who lovingly serves him and looks after him, until Don Quixote ill and exhausted dies. The direction is superb, and so is the dialogue which was beautifully translated. Filmed in Spain in natural surroundings you could almost feel the air. This film together with the book written by the illustrious Miguel de Cervantes y Saavedra should be part of the Schools and University Spanish teaching programme. One can watch this film over and over again.

Quirky classic
This is a visually sumptuous film which treats its central characters with a gentle quirky humour that never completely destroys their dignity and humanity.It is an almost impossible task to reduce Cervantes classic novel to film, but I doubt if there will be a better attempt. The success is primarily due to the outstanding performances of John Lithgow as the Don and Bob Hoskins as Pancho Sanza and John Mortimer's script. Lithgow's Don has a dignified strength which balances his over active imagination while Hoskins tongue in cheek interpretation owes much to the human weaknesses that so many of us share.It took a little while for the film to gain pace but as compensation this adult production had an imaginative energy that brought to mind Shakespeare's Twelfth Night and a Midsummer ... Great movie...not released in the US. Classic tale of Don Quixote and his faithful servant Sancho Panza. First one I've seen that is neither slapstick nor musical. Stands on it's natural comedic merits alone. Not highbrow, but seriously funny. John Lithgow is perfect in the part of the Don, and Bob Hoskins is funny as a half-wit that is proud of being ignorant. Very little special effects...it allows you to see what is real, and use your imagination to see what the Don sees, then gives you a glimse of whatever he thinks he's seeing.Great movie...not released in the US. It was well produced and sympathetic to Cervantes' original story. The acting was very good, especially Bob Hoskins as Sancho.
