Moto GP 2002 Season Review
2002 saw the introduction of the 4-stroke 990cc GP machines. Due to the initial development costs the smaller satellite teams were allowed to carry on using the outgoing 500cc 2-stroke bikes for this season before adopting the new 4-strokes for 2003. So for this one season only 990cc 4-strokes went head to head against the 500cc 2-strokes. Althought the 4-strokes dominated as far as wins were concered (not least because Valentino Rossi rode the factory RCV211V) the battles through the rest of the field highlighted the obvious advantages and disadvantages of each type of machine. This was the 2001 250cc champion Djaro Kato's first and only season in Moto GP before his untimley death at Suzuka during testing. It must be pointed out that he did crash more often than Randy De Puniet usually ... 2002 saw the introduction of the 4-stroke 990cc GP machines. It must be pointed out that he did crash more often than Randy De Puniet usually does in a season!! Even after he was given an RCV211 halfway through the season he still struggled to stay on. Jeremy McWilliams rode the Kenny Roberts Proton, putting in some stunning performances near the front of the pack. Alex Barros and Cappriossi showed that the 500's were still competetive as they rode some very impressive races on their Wests NSR500's. Alex was rewarded with his own RCV211V for the last few rounds where he managed to give Rossi a hard time. Sete Gibernau also put in an appearance on his GSVR Suzuki at the front of the field showing himself as a future contender. Rossi's main competition was from his team mate Ukawa and then Max Biaggi during the last half of the season once he got to grips with the new Yamaha M1. This DVD is a history lesson as much as a great racing DVD with many of the old favourite riders such as Hopkins, Kenny Roberts Junior, Carlos Checa, Garry Mcoy, and Shinyan Nakano as well as a greater variety of bikes and teams than we have seen in Moto GP for a long time. This season saw the biggest change in the sport for decades and showcases 2-stroke technology at its very peak and the birth of GP racing for the 21st century. A must have DVD for the Moto GP enthusiast!!!

a changing of the guard! the year when moto gp 990cc four strokes took over from the 500cc two strokes! i was gutted as in my opinion the 500cc two stroke is the best bike ever built! the figures speak for themselves, 500cc two stroke = 190bhp, 990cc four stroke = 240bhp. you have to double the engine capacity to get 50bhp. imagine what a 1000cc two stroke would be like!!!!! anyway it is a good season to watch as this was the rookie year of dai-chan (daijiro kato) he was an extremely talented young man who passed well before his time!
