About this product

Product Information

World War One aviators were more than just soldiers they were the knights of the sky, and the press and public idolised the gallant young heroes. But for Stanley Woolley, commanding officer of Goshawk Squadron, the romance of chivalry in the clouds is just a myth. There are two types of men up there: victims and murderers, and the code he drums into his men bans any notion of sport or fair play. This produces better killers but, even so, Wolley believes the whole squadron will be dead within three months. Derek Robinson quietly builds the day-to-day details of these mens lives and deaths into a powerful indictment of war. But this classic of war literature is also very funny, often painfully so; Shortlisted for the Booker Prize, this is Derek Robinson's masterly novel of the war in the air over the Western Front in 1918.

  • ace book

fantastic very good read all his books are very good easy to read. cant think of anything else to say

  • Experience the First World War with the pilots of Goshawk Squadron.

Goshawk Squadron is the first book in a trilogy of First World War novels about the Royal Flying Corp. I had previously obtained Derek Robinson's third book in this trilogy 'Hornet's Sting' and was totally absorbed by it. His style of writing is both informative, based on historical facts and technical accuracy, but also humorous despight the frightful conditions in war. So I just had to obtain 'Goshawk Squadron' which naturally compliments the first book. Again I could not put the book down once I had started. It is such a good read particularly at this time when we are remembering all those thousands of people who died in the 1914-18 War. If you want a first hand account of the pilots life in the First World War I recommend you read 'Goshawk Squadron'.
