About this product

Product Information

Michel Hazanavicius' stylistically daring, dialogue free comedy THE ARTIST stars Jean Dujardin as George Valentin, a matinee idol in Hollywood before the dawn of the talkies. His marriage is far from perfect, and one day he meets ambitious chorus girl Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo) and is smitten. Very quickly, sound comes to movies, and George sinks all his money into one epic silent film, while Peppy becomes a star in the new era. John Goodman co-stars as the head of the film studio.

Reviews
Philadelphia Inquirer - Strangely, wonderfully, THE ARTIST feels as bold and innovative a moviegoing experience as James Cameron's bells-and-whistles Avatar did a couple of years ago. Retro becomes nuevo. Quaint becomes cool., San Francisco Chronicle - In many ways - in all ways - THE ARTIST is a profound achievement., Chicago Sun-Times - Here is one of the most entertaining films in many a moon, a film that charms because of its story, its performances and because of the sly way it plays with being silent and black and white., The Globe and Mail (Toronto) - With elements of "A STAR IS BORN" and "SINGING IN THE RAIN," THE ARTIST is a rarity, an ingenious crowd-pleaser., Movieline - It's a picture that romances its audience into watching in a new way - by, paradoxically, asking us to watch in an old way. THE ARTIST is perhaps the most modern movie imaginable right now., Arizona Republic - The Artist is such an engaging, delightful film that, if you like movies, you will walk out of the theater with a smile. You just will; it's that inspired., Boston Globe - Michael Hazanavicius's love letter to classic cinema isn't perfect but it's close enough to make just about anyone who sees it ridiculously happy - and that includes children and grown-ups who have never come across a silent film., Tampa Bay Times - Hazanavicius crafted more than a replica of the silent era; this feels like a time capsule found 80 years later, right on time to be revolutionary in a louder world. Yet The Artist is a masterwork that likely won't be imitated. How many movies in 2011 can you say that about? Only the best one., The New York Times - This is not a work of film history but rather a generous, touching and slightly daffy expression of unbridled movie love., USA Today - Drama, comedy, action and romance are intertwined in this gorgeously photographed and brilliantly directed film. Lead performances are thoroughly engaging despite - or perhaps because of - being wordless., New Orleans Times-Picayune - If nothing else, this is a cinematic high-wire act.

    Wonderful movie

  • Incredible film, would highly recommend to anyone!

I bought this because I'd heard good things about it, and it won best picture at the Oscars which can't be a bad thing. Upon watching the film it didn't fail to disappoint. Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo played such authentic characters in what was a superb homage to the silent era. The added bonus of John Goodman is always welcome as he's a favourite of mine.

  • Superb performance in much acclaimed film

This is an artistic masterpiece. The film would not go amiss in the days of silent movies. When you think of great classic like 'singing in the rain' this also is a period drama set in the 1920/30's in America, the early days of silent cinema and the transition to talkies and how one artist found it hard to find a voice in this new world. I would recommend it to anyone's bluray collection
