In a college course I teach, I use an assignment called ‘The Sunflower Symposium,’ named in honor of Simon Wiesenthal’s (1976, 1998) "The Sunflower. On the Possibilities and Limits of Forgiveness". The book is divided into two parts. Part 1 is a snapshot in the life of the author relating an experience that occurred when he was an inmate in a Nazi death camp. Wiesenthal was taken one day from his labor brigade to a hospital at the request of a mortally wounded member of the Schutzstaffel (SS). The SS man wanted to confess and if possible, receive absolution from a Jew in the name of all Jews he had harmed or killed. For hours he described his crimes, while Wiesenthal listened long-sufferingly. When the SS man asked for forgiveness, Wiesenthal walked silently from the room. More than ...

  • Well Worth It

This book is one that will make you stop and think, not only about the author's personal experience, but it will have you asking yourself the question of what would you do, if you were Simon Wiesenthal. It makes a powerful and meaningful point, even in today's age. This is a great book not only for the individual, but a great discussion for a book reading group too. Highly recommend this one!

  • Great book, highly recommend it

The Sunflower is an excellent choice for anyone interested in Historical/Judaic writings of the World War II. The book is a profound account of the meeaning of forgiveness in the time of hopelessness through the eyes of a Jew in a concentration camp, interwoven with philosophical thoughts. I highly recommend it.
