In a college course I teach, I use an assignment called ‘The Sunflower Symposium,’ named in honor of Simon Wiesenthal’s (1976, 1998) "The Sunflower. On the Possibilities and Limits of Forgiveness". The book is divided into two parts. Part 1 is a snapshot in the life of the author relating an experience that occurred when he was an inmate in a Nazi death camp. Wiesenthal was taken one day from his labor brigade to a hospital at the request of a mortally wounded member of the Schutzstaffel (SS). The SS man wanted to confess and if possible, receive absolution from a Jew in the name of all Jews he had harmed or killed. For hours he described his crimes, while Wiesenthal listened long-sufferingly. When the SS man asked for forgiveness, Wiesenthal walked silently from the room. More than ... More than two decades later, Wiesenthal asked leading intellectuals what they would have done in his place: 'If you were a prisoner in a concentration camp and a dying Nazi soldier asked for your forgiveness, what would you do?' Their responses make-up Part 2 of the book and have become some of the most enduring documents of Holocaust literature and a hallmark of interfaith dialogue. The 1998 edition of "The Sunflower", issued in honor of the twentieth anniversary of the book’s original publication in the United States, includes the responses of a new generation of thinkers. Among the contributors are Sven Alkalaj, Bosnian Ambassador to the U.S.; Moshe Bejski, retired justice of the Supreme Court of Israel; Robert McAfee Brown, leading Protestant theologian; Robert Coles, Harvard professor of social ethics and author; The Dalai Lama; Eugene Fisher, National Conference of Catholic Bishops; Matthew Fox, author and leading Episcopalian theologian; and Yossi Klein Halevi, Israeli journalist and son of a Holocaust survivor. From the outset it is imperative to acknowledge that a subject matter like Genocide and the Holocaust is emotionally charged and teaching it is a challenging, and even daunting task. By raising Wiesenthal’s question one invites additional challenges, including the risk of oversimplifying, distorting, and possibility even denying the complexity and horrors of the Holocaust. Two contributors to the 1998 edition declare this a serious issue. Lawrence L. Langer writes: “I have no idea what I might have done… nor do I believe that the question is a legitimate one. Role-playing about Holocaust reality trivializes the serious issue of judgment and forgiveness that 'The Sunflower' raises” (as cited in Wiesenthal 1998:186). Similarly, André Stein argues: “Any a posteriori speculation as to forgiving a dying SS murderer is ethically questionable…. [I]t should not be argued in the lap of ordinary daily reality and with the distance of [time]” (as cited in Wiesenthal 1998:250-251). My students deem such concerns part of the moral dilemma of "The Sunflower". For the vast majority, "The Sunflower" embodies one of the most compelling questions to emerge from our course. "The Sunflower" is an effective tool for a pedagogical examination of basic moral and legal issues. It serves as a catalyst for discussions on legalized discrimination, the infringement of civil rights, (in)justice, (in)tolerance, civic responsibility, and the dangers of remaining indifferent in the face of oppression. It is an effective pedagogic tool for examining critically and taking action on an important global issue.

This book is one that will make you stop and think, not only about the author's personal experience, but it will have you asking yourself the question of what would you do, if you were Simon Wiesenthal. It makes a powerful and meaningful point, even in today's age. This is a great book not only for the individual, but a great discussion for a book reading group too. Great book, highly recommend it
The Sunflower is an excellent choice for anyone interested in Historical/Judaic writings of the World War II. The book is a profound account of the meeaning of forgiveness in the time of hopelessness through the eyes of a Jew in a concentration camp, interwoven with philosophical thoughts. I highly recommend it.
